Dump them. Set a garbage dump region, and then just mark crap you don't want as "dump", either by putting the cursor over the item and hitting the 'd' key, or by area selecting "dump items" in the area section menu (the one that dig and chop is in)pharoph wrote:nad also whats the mosy effective way to get rid of stones or use them up? can you sell them at the trade depot?
Basically highschool Applied Earth SciencesSwiftSpear wrote:It's pretty simple really... There's only 4 geology layers. For metamorphic you're most likely to find the best gems... but you have very little in the way of valuable ores (although there is some gold, IIRC no iron). Igneous Extrusive has iron and a plethora of other useless materials. Igneous Intrusive is a dice roll, it's a collection of low value metals for the most part, but it does often contain Gabbro, which is the only stone that contains both platinum and diamonds, as well as Granite, the best stone for finding both gold and silver. (both make high end trading extremely profitable, platium can also be found in any soil, so it's not vital to be near gabbro, but it means upper ground mining, which some people don't like)manored wrote:Oh, a dwarf geology expert... tips for a metamorphic layer based on quartzite? :)
Sedimentry I already covered. Sedimentry layers are thick iron and economic stones. They're also the only layer that contains Bauxite, the only stone which does not melt in lava (and therefore the only material you can use to make lava proof mechanisms). Limestone (a sedimentry stone) is also likely to contain galena, a useful ore that can smelt into silver. Finding sedimentary alone usually means you're able to start a strong metal economy, finding sedimentary near lava means you can have an elaborate lava moat and an obscenely strong steel economy based on magma metalworks.
Volcanoes seem to always contain both igneous intrusive and extrusive, that's pretty easy to find. Standard mountains are mostly igneous extrusive. Forests are generally either igneous extrusive or sedimentry, most other crappy environments (swamps, clay beds, and what not) are sedimentary (but watch out, if they are close to mountains not always). Metamorphic apparently corresponds to volcanic activity, but I've never personally found metamorphic rock.
[edit] Fun Articles:
Stones in dwarf fortress/layers
Ores in DF and where they're found
How custom world gen Param's work (also, in df/data/init/init.txt set map regection logging to yes. That way when working with custom map gens you get a log of why regects are happening, so you can tweak the map params and reduce the factor causing the rejection until it works)
On top of dumping them, if you set your dump next to a craftsdwarf workshop, you can mass-unforbid the dumped stones and turn them into crafts. A legendary craftsdwarf will work thro stones like a hot knife thro butter and the (mass of) resulting trade goods will buy you many sets of *Steel plate mail* from the traders. Just make sure you have a big finished goods stockpile nearby and a lot of binspharoph wrote:nad also whats the mosy effective way to get rid of stones or use them up? can you sell them at the trade depot?
You can't make weapons or armor with lead or zinc. You can pull Tetrajedrite copper (60% weapon power) out of Metamorphic and mix it with Cassiterite tin found in soil layers to make bronze (75% weapon power). If you're map is strictly metamorphic rock then that kinda sucks... The only real option then is to hunt for gems and hope you can trade some masterwork jemcrafts out for huge quantities of more valuable metals. Most of the other layers have at least some iron, so just hunt elsewhere if you can.manored wrote:You can sell then at the trade depot however raw stones value less and are heavy (there is a weight limit of stuff you can sell to the merchants).
Seens like the only ores im sure to find in a metamorphic lawer are lead and zinc. Are those any good for weapons? :) Id rather not have to buy metals since I have no wagon acess anywhere in my land so I dont think I will be able to buy much metal.
Edit: After some research it seens that those materials have around half the strengh of steel... so I suppose good training can cover up for it :)
No, it's a garbage dump. You set the dump location in the zone menu, it's the same menu you set activity zones, pond locations, and other assorted stuff. Then you assign items to be dumped, mass dumping (drag a rectangle and every item within it gets dumped) can be done from the area commands menu, the same menu digging is in. You can also choose to dump individual items from the item viewing mode (the one activated by the k key), if the cursor is over the item you have the option of setting the item to forbidden (which makes dwarfs not allowed to touch it) or dump (which makes dwarfs carry it to the garbage dump and leave it there)pharoph wrote:whats a dump?
is it just a simple stone stockpile?
You can't get rid of them persay. Theives are using the DF sneak skill, basically, if any dwarf/dog is near by them they have a chance of being spotted based on their skill at sneaking. If they enter the same square as a dwarf or dog they are very very likely to be spotted (although I'm pretty sure it's still not 100%). Basically, the best way to counteract theives is to ensure there are no roundabout entrances into your fortress, and then make sure there's a tonne of traffic in your front entrance (working dwarfs, dogs on chains/ropes, just all kinds of stuff). They will pick locks and can get through forbidden doors, but channels, walls, floodgates, closed bars, or any other solid unmanipulatable obstacle will stop them as they do not destroy items to gain entrance to a fortress. Once in a blue moon theives and child snatchers will still get into a fortress with tonnes of traffic in the front, and also, they will take any assorted crap left outside the fortress (or children hanging out in the case of kidnappers) so it's your own fault if you leave stuff easy to get.another question,,, howq do i get rid of thevies? some if your there help imediatly!
If you kill them then that specific theif doesn't come back (more will come though at some point, they always do). Just have a couple crossbowdwarfs patrolling your front entrance.pharoph wrote:thats a shame that you cant get rid of thieves. i think hes stealing my food. and its anyoing because he disturbs all of my dwarfs.
Get your stockpiles inside, or put restraints outside and tie war dogs to thempharoph wrote:ok dont do what i said becaue you cant build tables out side. gay.
