I came across your blog while researching a story for Wired on makers who use relatively high-tech devices at home (CNC, 3D printers, etc.). Your CNCÔÇÖd reliefs of video game maps seem, well, perfect for us. Techy, geeky, homemade. TheyÔÇÖre great. WeÔÇÖd like to have a writer interview you for a step-by-step feature on how you made those tables. Is this something youÔÇÖd be interested in participating in?

WeÔÇÖre on a bit of a deadline, so the writer would have to speak with you the first or maybe the second week of January, but the earlier the better. The interview could be done by phone, but we would also likely want to send a photographer out to shoot your home workshop and one of the tables.

So, Looks like i have some work to do. I've been considering actually cutting out the table, for real this time. Not just from scraps, but real, actual-value wood.

I am still thinking of doing MoonQ20, I think its a good map, but here is the deal I have.

If anyone is interested, and has a Map in mind they would like as an actual coffee table, and will work w/ me to get the details worked out as soon as possible, I will make the table and send it to you (After the photos have been taken of course), at nearly cost. I have come across a bunch of free wood (good quality stuff, but its REALLY heavy), so if it were made with that stuff, it would be free in materials (but the shipping would be more, than if it were made from other materials, but then the materials would cost more). If you would be planning on it being painted, the one material might be better than another. I suspect we'd be looking at a cost of over $100, but probably less than $250 (all depends on the details)

So, Here is what I need, if your interested:

First off, Half Down on the costs I incur.
A map choice
and time to work w/ me very quickly to make decision about construction,size, color, whatever)

What map were you thinking about? Would you just want the map, with raw edges, or maybe a border, maybe a title on the border... I like how your thinking. That's a fun idea, and I would love to make a wall decoration.

I thought about a Coaster set, Complete w/ Clear Resin poured over a map carved about 3x3, so its still a "flat" surface. Probably would need a painter to add some color and the like, but might be fun.

The Coffee Table is still a more suitable idea for Wired Magazine, but i am open to other ideas. I have wanted to make a "Skin" for my door, (Think like Skins for a cell-phone). Might be kinda fun to tell friends "Yea, were the 1st Cratered door on the right.", or how about "Just look for the door that just got shot with machine guns... Yeah, the one that is all rusty and chipped from shrapnel"

My copy of KB's article arrived Saturday. I think there's a single shot of Spring Map edit, but Spring and SpringMapEdit are both namechecked. An indepth copy of his instructions are available on http://wrdm.ag/moontable. I'd post scans but I'd really prefer Wired not sue me. If you're at a bookstore / newsstand, the cover is "How to Make Stuff" with a girl holding some sort of screwdriver / tesla coil on the front. He's on page 98-99.

I might make a map table at some point in the next few weeks as I'm finally starting to do some work with my CNC again.
