Spring RTS Engine

I read something a while ago that discussed why the United States is the only industrialized/developed country that has NEVER had a major socialist party.

It was pretty interesting. And it made me proud of America, for the first time in a while.

And it was in The Economist.

This thread is beginning to suck.

1) Using Katrina as an argument for global warming is a blatant straw(wo)man. Katrina was strong, but not incredibly so: two stronger hurricanes (in terms of pressure) and several slightly weaker ones have occured in the past (all before 1970; in other words before global warming was ever an issue). The only thing that made Katrina really famous was the extent to which government authorities failed at life in dealing with the problem. Do the names Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagin ring a bell?

2) None of the mass extinctions have global warming as the, or even a definite cause, although it seems likely for the Permian-Triassic event.

3) Consensus is not science. Refusal to release supporting data, as has happened in the IPCC more than once, is worse than not being science.

4) There is significant evidence for the Little Ice Age occuring in the Southern Hemisphere, it's just not as well documented for obvious reasons.

5) Climate change (hooray for unfalsifiable hypotheses! What makes people think the climate should remain static just for us, anyway?) is not the only reason to move to renewable energy sources.

6) Within reasonable bounds, rising temperatures have always been beneficial to mankind. Cold-related deaths will experience a more significant drop of 20000/year compared to the rise in heat-related deaths of 2000/year, assuming current trends continue for next 45 years (University of London study). Changes in land use, particularly with regards to agriculture, can easily overcome changes to local climate. Higher CO2 concentrations increase plant growth, including for "natural" vegetation such as forests. Global warming is not doom and gloom.

Wait, the Democratic Party under FDR in the 30s wasn't socialist? News to me!

...but really, the reason why we haven't had a major explicitly socialist party is that the two-party system isn't particularly amenable to it. However, both the Republicans and Democrats assimilated aspects of socialism between 1890 and 1940 - the Progressive Era. We are still left with most of what the socialists of that time advocated - Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, state welfare programs, unemployment benefits, workplace safety requirements, etc.

Socialism sucks because it has a idealistic view on humans, which is simply not true.

in the middle of what? its fun to see a society obsesed with speed and eficency ruled with systems that make sure everything is slow and uneficent (for the "common good", of course). trust a system based upon distrust!!

I agree that it will be beneficial for many human communities and if warming stays low it will probably lead to increased global agricultural output (thats one of IPPS conclusions too).
But I dont know if it's worth when the change is so fast that its going to kill many species and turn some poor societies to even poorer. And also estimated negative impact of droughts and some extreme weather events outstrips benefits of increased agricultural output.

I have just one thing to add:

Global Warming is not all bad.

There has got to be way more than 17 pirates in Somalia alone.
