To me, those are both completely appropriate. They may not be full page length essays, but SI was never designed to only have news that was more than a paragraph.

It's silly to pose limitations on news, because then there is no movement. Moreover, you stifle any developer interaction at all with users, because to meet your arbitrary demands they must make a giant post; That is a horrid practice.

Developers will not always take the time to rub your cock and dip your nuts in marinara sauce. More often than not, they just did something cool, and want to let their users know about it.

I save posts on the mainsite and desura to important news and release posts. I prefer people to be reading the G+ postings because that is by far the best medium for interaction and the place where I receive the most interaction. That and the fact that cross posting on the mainsite and desura isn't particularly fun.

If you're looking for "recent advances(tm)", you're going to have a lot more fun reading the dev updates than app update/release posts.

Instead, you need to be looking at it from the perspective that you should be saying "wham bam thank you ma'am (or sir as the case may be)" and be happy for any movement at all. In case you haven't noticed, spring gamedevs aren't a particularly talkative bunch unless we are yelling at the engine devs or each other.

Of course, if someone is making posts about things nothing to do with their game, then of course take those down, but in the cited examples, I am very much talking about things that have a pretty big impact on evo.

Because a brief sentence saying you didnt have time and theres a new NOTALobby is not news, the NOTALobby thread itself would be far better.

That and people are complaining about it, clearly people disagree with you, which means I get flak for including it.

Also, of course you find it relevant, you wrote it

Thanks knorke, all those videos are aggregated at the moment with the prefix knorke: would you like the Zero-K videos to stay that way or use Zero-K? They're already tagged as videos under Zero-K so they'll show up in the zero-k bits of the site

In this thread alone we have knorkian complaints, there are more in other threads:
knorke wrote:Well a lot of the stuff is not frontpage worthy.
example:

https://plus.google.com/112228438486109 ... ogle%2B%29
(It is also the same thing twice)
Here I have only a vague idea what is going on:

For a new visitor, it means nothing. (like most posts)
forboding angel on google+ wrote:Good god, found a new bug in Gunmetal Harbor map. Overseers don't spawn. Damnit. Time to have a chat with smoth...

Maybe I should save myself the trouble and just remove the map.
I might aswell rephrase it as:

"Gunmetal harbor map found to be buggy. Angry developer struggles to get a hold of Smoth and gives up. Content removed from EvolutionRTS"

Followed by a flamewar between myself you and Smoth ( who would quite rightly be pissed off ).

As for movement, aside from springfiles, the rest of the ecosystem seems to be generating plenty enough news. Sure it'd be nicer if some of it where in an RSS readable form, but there's plenty of activity happening from the moddb zeroK and youtube feeds to keep the site from stagnating

A hint of things to come:

Numerous youtube feeds have also been added to the list

Knorke complains about anything and everything. His opinions on the matter can safely be ignored.

If you don't have movement, no one will pay attention to it. Why are you having so much trouble understanding this concept?

Springfiles uploads do not count as movement. They are filler and you know it.

Without SpringFiles we would have 16 posts from July, and I'm sure there are more youtube feeds, even more if we add this sites feed and some others. SpringFiles makes up 36 posts out of 332 posts at the moment.

That roughly comes to a new post every day or two

It's on springinfo, but springinfo isn't what's powering the frontpage. Forboding is the one who can change that.

Enabled again. Please don't neglect it again like last time. That made me a sad panda.

Also, if you like, set up my g+ feed on approval. I'll go register an account now.

Edit: I can't. Seems that registration is disabled.

What are peoples thoughts on having the site autopost to a thread the way modelbase did?

imo not needed, if you are on forum then frontpage with news is only 1 click away...

Don't. Or if you do, at least call the appropriate phpbb function to do so instead of directly hacking into the database. (You need to sync the topic & sync the forum etc. after each post; this is implemented in php.)

I meant with Curl. SpringInfo isn't hosted on the same server and has no DB access

Registration is now open:

http://www.springinfo.info/wp-login.php?action=register

If you'd like to submit news articles yourself let me know and I'll arrange the necessary privilledges.

If your project has posts being pulled in and you'd like to claim ownership, signup and let me know and I'll assign all posts to the new account.

If your projects posts are pulled in as pending and require approval I can arrange for you to be able to approve posts or mark them as irrelevant.

If I implemented a means of submitting content as news and added a button on the forums so people could instantly submit a forum post as a news item, would people use it?

Some styling updates to the SpringInfo general design

Colour scheme changes, some minor margin and padding tweaks, header is no longer floating at the top, and switched from Droid Serif to Open Sans
