File sites should allow people to indicate directories into which their files should be uploaded, for example a new version of BA would go in to a BA folder. Then add a moderation system so things must be approved before they're added to the search index. You can upload files and share them freely, but until they're approved, they don't show up in search results. Certain users would not need upload moderation if uploading to a folder they have rights over.

If I wasn't already in hot water over Absolute Annihilation Forever, even I could devise a system like this out of PHPBB pretty easily.

Apologies if this is how it already works, I know I'm out of touch. It's just a system I've seen work very well elsewhere.

Or, hypothetically, take a mod, sodomize it, and call it versions 3, 4, and 5 in quick succession, each by a different person, destroying someone's sanity.

nice fail there. all autohosts links to springfiles.com search function for maplink.

make a new map, and nobody can get a maplink...

its easier to just do if("special" in $string) hide_result();

This is real source code from my sites:

Code: Select all

$banned_words = array(
	"special",
);
no maps with special will be added.

The moderation queue, presumably, wouldn't be longer than 24 hours or so. The first 24 hours after a map's released, the only people hearing about it are the ones that are active on this forum, during which time a link could of course be provided.

It takes a little while for anything to get wide success, especially if you're talking about getting Spring players to try something new. Just ask every mod developer except me. The first 24 hours or even 48 hours wouldn't hurt anything in the long run. I think the benefit would be more than worth it: having better assurance that when someone is downloading "DSD v1.2" or whatever, they are actually just getting a new version of a well-known map, and not having their game hijacked.

Or, have the main search results and then beneath it, "XX Files found matching your query, they are available for download but have not yet been added to the approved database:"

Maybe I'll even do it... I'll just put it at the bottom of my list...

<AF>OMFWTF!?! An array for a single line item? Noes! The whales will be outhunted, grass will die, Hallie's tits will sag, and the world will end (simultaneously!)!!!!!</AF>

its array for that reason in the future he will make lots of other names to dodge my attempts to ignore his maps :regret:

i probably have to start using regexp eventually, since his dodging will evolve too much... probably it ends up scanning the mod files with extra units...

edit: oh shit, did i say mod files, i meant map files.

I played my DeltaSiege_Island_8_Way map for 24 hours in the first 24 hours when i released it. And the next 2 months as well. when i stopped hosting it, nobody played it :D

Well part of the problem is that people always join the autohosts. Whenever I host, and advertise my super good connection, people just come in, say "!balancefuck, !maplink, !imgay" and then ragequit "NOOBHOST /me has left the battle". means that no good maps get hosted because all the autohosts are very poorly maintained. only good map that gets hosted is dsd, but we dont need 20 dsd hosts imo.

I recommend banning all autohosts that dont pass some sort of intelligence test. [lol]robot not only hosts maps based on lobby statistics to bring back old trends but She also can carry on a conversation with the players and identify problem's in newbie's strategies. She can act as a player and automatically combomb troublesome players and She can ban people who abuse smurfs. She acts like an actual person, instead of a retarded robot. SHE EVEN BROUSE SPRING FORUM ADN HALP WITH INFOS FOR NEWBIES AND EVEN "PRO" LIK TRITON

Trademark thank you for your invaluable services. Here is an action play for filehosts:

1. Make a list of users who do the following (list is wip, we can add more) :
* Post files who have the world "special' in them
* Post versions of AA after 2.23 (iirc that was the latest)
* Post shitty remakes of metalmaps like speedballs and speedmetal

2. Ban these users from all filehosts

3. Delete all the files posted by these users

4. Ban these users from spring forums from even viewing them, and ban them from spring lobby server.

This should solve alot of the aids that has been plaguing spring in the past decade, particularly recently.

It's really strange but true, I think the abundance of autohosts and the gatekeeper ability they provide their owners is probably doing more harm than good. Any chance the autohosts might be able to auto-rotate through maps, or even through mods?

They can, and some do, but almost always the rotation is broke by a !map command from someone who wants to play DSD. Also, the map choices by the server admin may be less-than-desirable... nothing like a good greenfields game.

Then there's those servers that have ONLY DSD. And yes, I'm serious.

lol ya, i forgot to disable certain maps on my autohost, and when i was 15mins afk, the map was changed to DSD already.

He was all, but now you can't play this new map. But then you were all, really? What now, bitch?

You've still got it, TM.
