That's not a geography question then, that's an English question (and it has been argued that "America" can still refer to the continent and technically there's a Brazil inside the US). Are you surprised that non-native speakers don't get such subtle differences? It's still a foreign language to us, no matter how much it's used on the internet.

Maby it can, but it shouldn't be. It's pretty much generically incorrect to refer to the American continents as "America".

They are North America, South America, and "The Americas"... not "America" we reserved that one for the US only.

I thought it was pretty commonly accepted that "North America" and "South America" were two different continents.

Ive never in my whole life heard someone refer to Canada or Brazil or any other country in north or south America as simply being in "America".

Most people accept america as USA and americans as people from USA, but thats not really right. America was supposed to mean the continent and americans people who live in this continent. And I think that America is considered a single continent, but subdivided in smaller ones because of its shape and leght.

America is not considered a single continent.

Sorry, I hope I'm not giving the impression I'm anti-American or pro-Canadian even, seriously I'm not. I'm just shocked at the state of the world in general and the public's acceptance/ignorance of the situation. It's sickening. When we discuss Americans, the foremost things are the ones I mentioned: blissful ignorance of the state of the world at large, and a totally ineffectual governing body. As another poster stated, there's just a few thousand people in power, all with totally different agendas that vary depending on what's popular or will give them political points at any given time.

Now, if we want to discuss Canada, we've got largely the same situation. There are really only 3 or 4 notable political parties, and that just means there's 3 or 4 lying conglomerates rather than 1 or 2. The only thing Canada's really ahead on is its leader's ability to shut the **** up at appropriate moments and not looking like a nuke-horny cowboy imbecile. Gotta have nukes in the first place in order to get nuke-horny.

Ah... I can't discuss this political nonsense anymore, it makes me get depressed thinking about it.

Clearly we all need to move to Sweden, they've got it right

America was supposed to mean whatever people think it means; that's how language works.

That's not correct. Language evolves. The north and south American continents haven't been referred to as "America" for more than 100 years. There is no longer an American continent. America ONLY refers to the USA now.
