I say we tell veterans of TA this: "Hey! Look! It's TA! Oh, don't like it? Try E&E! (or AATA, or FF, or any number of games that aren't TA)"

Draw them in with AA or OTA, and if they bitch, refer them to something else. I'm sure we can somehow please newcomers without breaking anything.

Ok for all you people who want to discard this project and think it's bullshit for whatever reason and want to focus more on AA/XTA whatever:

Get the fuck away from this topic and stop posting, if you don't like the idea then stop bitching when there are plenty others who like it.

The project is an excellent idea and a good way to bring old TA'ers into spring and it should have been done long, long ago.

I find it somewhat ironic that you are telling us that if we don't like AA, that we should go find something else to play - in a thread about an OTA mod, which is precisely that something else, Candleman.

Many people here seem to kick and scream about how OTA is the devil, how TA players are ruining everything (conveniently ignoring that AA, of course, is still essentially TA), even doing so in this thread. Is it that if this OTA mod existed, they'd have noone to blame anything on?

I don't mind an OTA mod, but the new players have to know that there are alternatives.

TA-style units aren't the only thing spring offers.

Fine. Go ahead. Make OTA for spring. But make other things too. That way, if they say it sucks or someone screwed it up and it's nothing like OTA at all, they can play any number of things that aren't "wrong."

I'm making lots of other things.

"goofs" at tau: I'm referring to the denizens of the forum, not the people who... actually do things...

Candleman, it's not like it will be the default mod.

I can assure you if a TA mod was created, AA would still dominate it as the most popular mod. Besides, an OTA mod doesn't really suit Spring, because it doesn't really take advantage of everything that Spring can do, whereas a mod made specifically for Spring does.

AA already does this and does it well.

As you seem to have enough time, go and tell them.

No. It doesn't bring old TA'ers back at all. Have a look inside #gnug on the tauniverse IRC and go ask them why they still play TA and not Spring and you'd get the idea.

AA certainly does it, which was the reference I was making.

Whether it does it well is entirely up to personal opinion. Personally, I think it does it adequately, but not well.

most definitely aa could be better. Part of the problem lies in the inconsistency of the units and the lack of usefull functional units. Also, while caydr does remove useless units I find AA to generaly have an odd tech progression curve.

Either way I would have to go back to it in order to make detailed suggestions. However, rightfeild some of the OTAers are pricks who expect everything to be exactly like it was in ota and will shun any realtively abberant behavior in spring! Let alone the major stuff.

I think spring is a BETTER game then OTA even with it's bugs.

In summary:

1) RealOTA is a cool mod idea and yes Cadyr should continue to make it. It would probably help bring in those people who dislike other mods for whatever reason, and would also be a nice change/revisit for our current playerbase every once in a while. :-)

2) AA is also a cool mod. Admittedly many people probably play it just because everyone else does, but of course, many people also play it because they think its a great mod ;)

are we done now? :P

Ive been playing TA for about 8 years now (finally found forums about TA original and eventually stumbled upon TA spring), Just started playing TA spring a couple days ago and i like it just as much as original TA. Also been playing the AA mod as well and its great too. And damn i cant get enough of explosions!

Lightyears is a measurement of time as well

I'm with you on this one. However, Gnome is a skilled modder - and his opinion is valid as well.

I'm blatantly disregarding the instruction in this post, luckily this doesn't bother me.

It seems odd to make a Spring mod to precisely diplicate OTA gameplay, when OTA already precisely duplicates its own gameplay.

On the other hand, there are mods in which some features of OTA would be useful, such as fire-through weapons. The addition of useful features is good, but for it's own sake.

I would expect OTA purists to stick with OTA regardless - after all, a perfect Spring duplicate would be exactly as good as OTA, not better.

Ever wonder if arguings going to make any difference? No offence but no ones opinions are going to be changed, no matter what anyone says he'll probably still make the mod. I find whenever i get an idea, no matter how impossible, i usually try despite what others say. For all anyone knows it may even turn out better then original Total Annihilation.

In astronomy, The Lightyear is not a measurement of Time, however, it can be used to measure time, and often is.

The distance light travels in one year: about 9.461 ├âÔÇö 1015

THe fact that it is measured in years is an aspect of time, therefore it can accurately be used as a measurement of time.
