Re: Google+
Or you could use google plus and not have to worry about the privacy issues.
Re: Google+
when i see you writing, forb, it feels to me like... a US commercial from the 50ties.
the perfect house wife explaining the vacuum cleaner:
"use Google+, and you never have to worry about privacy any longer, cause everything about you is safe and sane, guarded by the best traditions of our forefathers and the church and whatnot.
get Google+ today, and privacy is no word you will have to worry about anymore. did you know, that privacy is a communists thing?
and who would worry anyway.. we are all good citizens, aren't we?

but no, they would never use your data (except searches) for anything!"There is no standard Google anymore," says Eli Pariser in a recent TED talk. And he's right. Try it. Google the same thing as the person sitting next to you and compare the results. Chances are, they're different. According to Pariser, that's because Google uses as many as 57 different signals to determine the unique search results it serves you. It cross-references (among other things) your computer model, your choice of browser, your geographic location, your search history, the cookies it's stored on your hard drive, and data from your various social networks to determine what you'll most likely want to see when you're curious about something. As best it can, Google is personalizing the world for you.
Re: Google+
Yeah, I noticed that Google learnt what I search for, despite my constant cookie cleaning.

bah, i wanted to write that!hoijui wrote:when i see you writing, forb, it feels to me like... a US commercial from the 50ties.
But I got disattracted while browsing youtube for the most lol ad :/

the "related videos" on youtube adjust too based on previously viewed stuff. Clearly the only solution is to watch moar random stuff.zwzsg wrote:Yeah, I noticed that Google learnt what I search for, despite my constant cookie cleaning.

Except I cannot accidentally fall on "random" stuff anymore since google filters them out for me.knorke wrote:Clearly the only solution is to watch moar random stuff.
Re: Google+
Hoijui that's because google has a little icon controlling privacy next to everything on your profile, specifying who and what to share, all you have to do is goto your profile and click edit at the top, and everything infront of you becomes editable with a privacy icon that lets you hide it all.
There's nothing that's forced on you, you don't even have to use your real name.
And when you make posts it asks you which circles/people to share with along with the options Public, Extended Circles, and Your circles. It also does this with resharing, BUT, the original poster can choose to disable resharing or commenting, and there are limits to who you can reshare with. E.g. if a post is not public, you cant reshare to the public, but you can share it amongst your circles.
At any time the original author can click disable commenting/sharing and all sharing of that item discontinues.

Re: Google+
Ok, so let me get this straight...
You take issue with google using:
Your browser brand and version, what you most commonly search for, publicly available information about your interests, the location of your IP origination in order for it to provide you with more relevant ads and search results, but you have no issues with Facebook publishing every scrap of information you have ever fed it to the FBI without even being served with a search warrant.
You have no issue with facebook datamining the shit out of you, and take issue witht he company that did this: http://mashable.com/2007/11/14/google-s ... wins-case/
Jesus guys? Seriously? Where do you come up with this horseshit?
Also, did you forget that you can turn off the targeted information and even google gathering your searches? Don't know how to turn it off?
Hmm, bwhahahaha go google it!

Re: Google+
I would guess google gains data even from this group/circles thing.
Like you sort your boss into a "work" circle so he does not get some messages etc, then google knows your connection to your boss even if you never filled out your work place.
Or a friend sorts you into his "fat men on horses" circle, then google knows about that hobby of yours too.
And people wonder why they just signed up and "ooooh its already proposing people I know from rl!"

Re: Google+
lol, good thing you don't know me irl. I like to feed the datamine :)
Re: Google+
Google already has the data to figure this all out, especially with google apps gaining traction with businesses.

forb.. who ever in this whole thread said something positive about facebook?
forb.. these cigarettes.. you know... ah forget it!
take yourself a break to puff, k? .. nah, nah, don't worry... it's fine. you do me a favor some other day, i am sure!

so one little example; the CIA sold its earth imaging satellites to google... how nice of them, to make these services possible for all of humanity to use, without any benefit for themselfs!
And how good that the NSA secures googles networks, so we can be absolutely sure no bad guys get to them.
" ... la la laa.. and the laaa'aand of the freee! la la laaa la laa ... laaaaaa!!!" *the happening of dropping of tears of joy*

(In-Q-Tel ~= CIA)ItÔÇÖs not the very first time Google has done business with AmericaÔÇÖs spy agencies. Long before it reportedly enlisted the help of the National Security Agency to secure its networks, Google sold equipment to the secret signals-intelligence group. In-Q-Tel backed the mapping firm Keyhole, which was bought by Google in 2004 ÔÇö and then became the backbone for Google Earth.

Just tried the hangouts thing, was a lot of fun actually, and works ridiculously well. I had the presence of mind to rickroll the hangout

Re: Google+
who needs any of this myfaceplus anyway. everyone I want to be in contact with is either in my phonebook or irc channels.
then again if I had a higher tolerance for dealing with bullshit from people I barely know and don't give a fuck about I'd have probably had a lot more fun in high school so whatever

Re: Google+
That's the neat thing about google plus, just interact with the people you know, not the ones you don't. For the first time ever since using a social network of any kind, I'm actually enjoying it because I don't have to filter stuff because anyone can see it.
Now I just set circles, and do what I want. It's quite awesome.

Re: Google+
To be perfectly honest, the only reason I prefer Google+ to facebook is because its color scheme is easier on the eyes.
