And there isn't a single site width that looks right on all font settings in all browser
Anything about 800 will do just fine, 1024+ is preferable though. Then every single site WILL look fine provided the designers aren't entirely stupid and doesn't stretch text all over the window just because they can.
I get a very narrow frame with only a few words per line.
I get that problem each time I read a book or a newspaper too, I really wish they would do something about that soon!
So really, you should leave it up to the user, who can choose to change his browser window
Resizing windows all the time is just a waste of time as mentioned... It should be left to the user though, but only as an optional style as has already been done. Not as a default.

I read around 10 forums regularly on 1680x1050 and this is the only one which is fixed width, and the only one that annoys me as a result. If there's one thing which is annoying about open source software it's the combination of

"My way is the best way!"

followed by

"But why would you want to do that, my way is the best!?"

It is definitely unreasonable to go around using software and websites that someone else has put all the effort into and demanding they make changes to accommodate you or change their default settings to your preference, but it's just as annoying when any time someone expresses a preference they get jumped on by twenty people who have differing opinions.

I'm not demanding anything, I'm requesting something, and I would've done it myself if I could, but I can't, I don't know why people get upset about a simple request

It was aimed more at ZellSF and Forb than you Hoi, I also would like a wide theme, can't make it myself and don't see anything wrong with making a polite request.

Funnily enough the same applies to me - and the spring board is by far the easist to read. :P

Fluid width would be better IMO, having a little strip of forum in the middle of my screen does indeed make it more difficult/annoying to read.

Edit: perhaps an admin can provide current theme here so it can be edited. Also, while we are bitching about themes, how about a forum theme that matches the site?

You're thinking in pixels, which is a bad idea. My living room computer is hooked up to a 1080p monitor. That means the width of the screen is 1920 pixels. 800 pixels is less than half of the width of the screen. Seeing as I have the font size set quite high to make text readable from my sofa. Seeing as you hard-code the width of the forum in pixels, it doesn't look right.
I get that problem each time I read a book or a newspaper too, I really wish they would do something about that soon!
The web is not a physical print medium. Using the limitations of another medium as justification for doing something on another medium is stupid. Oh, and newspapers and books still fill the whole page using multiple columns. This forum doesn't.

I disagree. It's up to me how wide I want text to be, the web is not intended to be a 1:1 pixel-perfect medium, stop trying to force it on people.

FFS, you can do it, do it and stop talking. I may not know everything but people are used to paragraphs being a specific width.

I am fond of a fixed+elastic and I hate liquid but it doesn't matter I don't want to join the damn pissing contest. I'll put the challenge up, someone do it, I'll admit I am wrong I am not perfect. I had a liquid layout once on my forum and read others with similar but MY opinion is the text is all that matters and this is a forum so making the text easy to read is important.

If this was a site for a movie I would want it in flash without html. whatever you people just cannot let this shit die. LET IT FUCKING GO. Most of this post would look like 1-3 lines in a liquid layout. OFC I actually like having the text is a normal width and easy to read.

So do it, if you know it do it and prove the point! What? are you scared practicing your perfect skills? Sinbad gave some real code. So right now he is winning.

Tobi I 100% agree with you.

Being sick for a week where I could barely browse this site has given me time to figure out my problem with this place too much telling others what to do without trying to make the actual effort. So put up or shut up.

This forum should be made roughly 20-30% wider but kept at that width. However ti should b flexible to expand when the contents of a page are wider, such as the private message section of this forum, which makes a mockery of this site template.

The zoom function in my browser extends the layout, so that's not really a problem that makes me think thinking in pixels is a bad idea.
The web is not a physical print medium. Using the limitations of another medium as justification for doing something on another medium is stupid.
Books and newspapers aren't made that way because of limitations, but because it is easier to read.
Oh, and newspapers and books still fill the whole page using multiple columns. This forum doesn't.
Yes I know, probably technically difficult, but you can use two windows if you *must* use your entire screen.
I disagree. It's up to me how wide I want text to be, the web is not intended to be a 1:1 pixel-perfect medium, stop trying to force it on people.
That's not what I said at all. I said that leaving that choice to window resizing is a bad idea. Nothing else.

Copy the entire template and rename it to "Currentstylename Fluid", change lines 134-137 in "Overall_Header" to:
<tr><td class="headertd">
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="85%">
<tr><td bgcolor="#20292E" class="headertd"><img src="/images/pixel.gif" height="10" width="1" /><br /></td>
<td bgcolor="#C8D2DA" width="84%" class="headertd"> <!-- 4C626F -->
And all should be right with the world, that way in the user cp the user would be able to choose what he or she likes best. It is very simple to do. I have never even worked with PHPBB templates and I found the answer in about 5 minutes, so meh, go figure.

Btw 85% because it's bad form to quite literally take up the entire page if you do not have sidebars. 100% would be as eyesore and the current fixed with is now on large resolutions.

"location_bar.gif" can be fixed quite easily by doing it the right way (which should have been done in the first place) by simply using a 1 px slice of it, setting that as a background image, then at either side you have a 5 pixel image which is the rounded corners.

Same can be done for "bottom.gif".

Now given the fact that the above is 5 minutes worth of work, is it that big of a deal to implement? Or is it the fact that no one knew (or even bothered to look) into how to do it? We're talking about a grand total of less than 8 lines here.

If someone would be so kinda as to zip up the current template, I can make the changes, and post it wherever you want. You don't even need to make hooha about it or anything, just allow for the option to be there.

tobi wrote:Jeez, GTFO bitch or fix it yourself. kthxbai.
I offered to make an alternative over a year ago. kthxbai

Even before phpbb allowed for user defined styles, it was still patheticly easy to do by a simple if statement that tripped a parameter in a cookie when the user logs on (by using a checkbox... "Fluid Width: 1|0"). All you do is tell the theme that if x exists, load a different file. That's super easy to do do, and technically, that's the messy way to do it.

You say "Bitch" as though I was incapable of doing it myself, which I find amusing, considering that so long ago I offered to make an alternative. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face... I would also like to know why you felt the need to 'attack' me personally when my post wasn't even directed at you. That just doesn't make sense to me.
Detailed explaination on how to do it. If someone would be kind enough to zip up the current theme for me, I would be happy to make it happen.

Its in svn, however this is still table based. Switching to css and divs would make it render faster in the browser, easier to understand, faster to download, smaller file size, less bandwidth use, and more flexible int he long run, as well as more cached data.

+ its not good to read text which has very long lines horizontally.

Hoi sucks, now lock this thread because i insulted him.

Lol I know alot of sites with a wide theme, and locking threads becaus you don't see the point of them? If this thread will be locked all your threads should be removed becaus of the pointlessness h key anyone?

to get back on topic, could someone please make this? It would also prevent the site layout from breaking.
