Depends on what you consider work on appearance and what the local culture demands. Men are often expected to exercise more often and consistently than women - is this not work on your appearance?

I feel like men aren't expected to work as much on most things, but that is my personal bias and I don't want to overlook the work men are often directed to do via social norms.

Men are expected to exercise more in US? That's a very good thing they are. Most US tourists here frankly look like they could use a LOT of extra exercise!

In Israel unless its some super serious firm men are allowed to come to work without smooth shaves.

A dude in his twenties and thirties doesn't need to look a partner seriously, he can just mess around and have fun while focusing on his career.

A girl in her twenties needs to focus on her career while also trying to find a suitable mate, which is not so easy when most guys her age just want to hook around and have fun. Then she needs to marry said mate and have his children. If she hasn't done all this by the time she is in her thirties, society would view her as a failure of a woman.

When a guy reaches his early forties and isn't yet married, he doesn't really have to sweat it because society still sees him as a successful man thanks to his career, maybe he would even be seen as a handsome playboy now ready to settle down, and his younger competitors are just trying to have fun, so he's left with all those young women who want to find someone dependable to settle down with.

No wonder women spend so much time trying to be attractive to men!
They can't waste time lying on their sofas, getting stoned and watching kids tv programs in their twenties, sober up in their thirties and get a haircut and a job, and then in their late thirties or early fourties knock up some girl who happens to be infatuated with them.

I heard about that too. Obesity is becoming a big problem everywhere unless you're talking about a country where they have major problems with not having enough food to go around.

Ironically its even in those countrys- once you have enough food to come by, you get the lowest stuff which is beans, potatos, fett fried pork, and thats it, every day. So ironically even in africa & south Asia/america, where there is wealth, there is fat.

As of 2007, US had obesity rate of around 26%, higher than any european country and quite a bit higher than EU average. Furthermore the 'obesity rate' is misleading because it only counts severe obesity and tells nothing about what typical person looks like.
Albeit yea there's more and more obese people in Lithuania, I have to admit. More fast food and so on. This summarizes it well. Ex-soviet countries are very much wanting to be "living in america". Of course if soviet propaganda was telling for decades how bad US is, it must be great.
