Whilst its a cool model it looks nothing like the solar from TA! That wold be my main problem with it. I'd ratehr just a retexture... (BTW, hell yhe turn down teh reflectivity a bit... And ill alter teh grey, so far ive only made features so it took a while to figure team colour out at all!!)

I vote to darken that blue, brown the bottom edges of the baseplate/rotators where they meet the ground, make the specular highlightiing a little less, make the top of the center cone teamcolor, and get rid of the copyrighted Arm symbol... then it's perfect.

Very nice work there, Mr. D, I really like that- it's fresh without being completely alien :-)

@aGorm:

If they just do a reskin, it's never going to be Original Art. At some point, people need to cross that bridge. That is a far better model than Zenka's, in large part because it's not just slavishly re-making a model that wasn't particularly inspired in the first place :P

MRD for win. Love the model.
1. Make the solar panel tex more like th zenka-modded-aGorm-tex.
2. pop it into AA.

Well, I intent to step away from OTA content. (both the silencer and flea were compleatly remade). but I will always hang to the designes from OTA. that is becouse you will most likly be needed to recreate the entire set before using it.
I think, trickly speaking that my solar is OTA content free, unless we cannot use the disignes either.

I'm happy with whatever model is used. as long as it's a new one ;)
I'll be more then happy to convert MR.D's model to s3o.

I think maybe this sepends what mod its for... I mean, it would be nice to have a mod whitch keeps the OTA look (I hope XTA does...) then that can just be removed from the original download and you can get it seperatly. Then it can fall under the if you own teh original clause. Beside you'd have to change EVERY aspect to stop them saying its TA to be fair.

So true. the most reason behind remodeling is to make it look better, yet fitting it in a mod.

hey Mr. D, if you put like metal support with team color around the opening door panels, i bet it look great

How about this?
I got the PolyCount down to 158.

*Contents of Zipfile*
1 .bmp origional UVmap textured
1 texture map with teamalpha (.dds DXT3-Explicit Alpha)
1 reflect map (.dds DXT3-Explicit Alpha)
1 3DS-max5 origional Model file
1 .3ds exported Universal format model

http://mrd.str8-6.com/files/Arm_solar_fixed_MRD.zip

I really need to get max-7 so I can do a clean export to .S3O.

Its really bothering me that each time I export, the origin/pivot of each object gets reset, and no Hiarchy is saved, so all sorts of fiddling with the parts has to be done in upspring to get anything working.

If you guys can wait, I'll try to get ahold of my friend to do a clean export to .S3O to avoid all these problems. Its just a matter or waiting for him to show up.
Or if anyone knows of an existing Plug-in for 3DStudio-Max-5 to export to .S3O.

MR.D ruulez... i love this Solars... its time for the old TA Stuff to be reclaimed and built into something new...

Have to disagree slightly here... sure a mod could be made with differnt models, but you cant go changing the look of say XTA or AA, becasue they wont be total annialaion if you change the look. There seperate from the engin so there no longer a worry about People coming down on the engin anymore, just teh mod's, hence thoise mods dont need to be GPL. I mean honestly teh solar is Iconic, changing justt hat would pretty much stop TA being TA.

Good for a mod, but not XTA ect...

(PS the model is cool however)

I dissagree with aGorm that the modle is not "TA" because when I look at it I go: "Hey...thats a neato looking TA solar."

Its just a cooler and neater one.

TBH guys, I really like the texture of my 1st try, moreso than this new one I did.

Is the ARM logo really a huge issue?

I know it represents TA content, but the model, and texture are completely new content, and other than the logo it doesn't contain any TA property.

Unless you try to sell this as a product, what harm is there?
And how badly does ATARI want to push the issue?

What you should do is re-model the solar. Its not enough simply to have it skinned. Its a crappy 5-poly model FFS! REMODEL! And no, not like that giant tit of a solar collector (though its nice, it looks nothing like the original)

who says it has to look like the original? I like MR.D's solar, looks sweet

The people that think ity should look liek teh original are teh ones that actully go around building them in game. Call me old fashiond, but when I play a game of 'TA' Spring I expect to find TA solar collectors.

If I was playing 'remodeld TA' Spring, then fine, but I think that should be left to another mod, having a remodeled solar in XTA would just be.... wrong.

Again... the models not what Im against, just putting it in TA.

Imagin if someone went, hay thay WW2 tanks a bit low pollie, ill remodel it! And then someone said yes, and while were here lets make it hover, and give it a small plasma accelerator... It would so ruin teh WW2 mod...

I personally think that clinging to the art of TA is a waste when the spirit is independent.

I think the point is just that the two goals:

1) Recognisable as a TA model, and "fit" into OTA-esque mods
2) Free of Atari IP

are not reconcilable or achievable in the same model. You need to pick which one you are aiming for. If it's 1, then keep the arm logo, and remodel the solar like the ones we're seen here (good, btw). If it's 2, you need to come up with a new design yourself, and make it from scratch. And I don't think Mr. D's counts, it's too close to TA.

And honestly, you guys are still dependent on TA game design, unit names, ect. You'll never get XTA or AA to be GPL without fundamentally altering it, so stop worrying about it and just use one of the remodells you have in this thread.

Presisly my point, XTA isn't trying to become free of IP, its a port of TA to sping... why the hell try and make it a little less infringin when you can't gop the whole hog.
