it's all about the filesize for me; i don't care too much about 20 pixels on a side as long as i can upload my 5000 frame animated gif

Ascetically I'd prefer not to increase the height of avatars, but it's not really something I'd pull rank on, I don't feel strongly.

In terms of file size I would want to talk to whoever is running our web server before I jump behind an initiative to push forward, but I'd prefer to have larger file sizes for higher quality and better animation. I'd only be guessing as to how expensive it would be though. In theory a modern web server shouldn't have much problem with the quantity of the tiny images in the database somewhere. And realistically, only active forum members would be likely to update, so it's not like we'd be suddenly having 10,000 members with triple the image file size over night or something.

My personal preference would be a 5 kb size bump. I think the current avatar size is alright.

not sure if want, that looks ok with sinbads washed out and light coloured avatar, but what if someone put somthing really stark and high contrast, or just solid black- wouldnt that make the author box look like anus and hide the identity of the poster?
