Green, do you just want some conceptual stuff? I might be willing to do some quickie mockups.

From what I'm reading here, though, that what I'm getting here is that people aren't stepping in because nobody's really getting any art direction here. This was a problem with the units requested, where I put nearly three weeks into a tank that was turned down when somebody on the SYs bothered paying attention :P Hopefully others will get better feedback- it doesn't take a lot of time to check a thread.

You SY folks really, really should "hire" a proper art director, who knows what they're doing and can direct content creation, for all of the things that require it... the amount and quality you're going to get from random freelancers is going to be ... random, and you need somebody qualified to be your editor, instead of just getting random feedback- it's a wonder anything ever gets done. You cannot build solid art around consensus- like good game design, it requires creativity, which is inherently risky. I'd suggest asking TRO if he wants the job, since he doesn't seem to be involved in the modding end of things around here, and is a talented artist with a distinctive style.

I'd volunteer, but I'd rather make games with Spring- I feel I can best promote this game engine that way, and my talents are best used in this manner. After all, if there aren't cool mods, then there's no reason to have this ultra-fancy engine, neh? At any rate, I think y'all should think it over- thus far, all these "consensus" art campaigns have led to is endless bickering and nonsense, and zero real progress. Get an artist on-staff, give them direction and a vision, and turn 'em loose. Let the crowds whine- if this new GUI is as extendable and re-configurable as it sounds, people will step up and make "better" ones if they are sufficiently motivated, which sure beats endless back-and-forth in search of the non-existant stylistic approach that is cool... and offends no one ;)

Uh... tired. Clicked on this thread, saw a kind of "main menu" thing. Something about a background. Air combat script. Cool. But loading time. So not cool.

But maybe the background could have a single custom S3O object on its background. What this S3O does would be determined by a script, just like with a unit. Also some kind of defineable (by mod? or by ... i dunno whatever) music. So... Spring load up, this "whatever" appears, and whatever's under "go()" starts happening.

Sound nice? So you could make a sort of Deus Ex (1)-style background or something. I've got just the thing in mind, but that's my business. I'm sotired...

Hmmm deus EX.

I like both ideas (model and script).
If both are possible, let the player choose what fits him best.
On a high end pc, it is understandable that the player might want the air script.

I think teh problem we actully have is that, whilest there are alot of skilled artists, most of them have limited time, and importantly, total;y different styles.

For instance, Noises (It was noise right?) packsots and stuff were very nice, but in a totaly different style to anything I'd do. His was verging on cartony, flashy, WOW, stuff.
Were as I'm more a simplistic style sort of person genraly.
Anyway, the problem is half the pople like one way, half like the other, but it would be grosly unfair on somebody thats goona put time in if they are forced to do somthing in a way they find displeasing.

Maybe what we need is not 1 art dirctor who has the final say, but 3 or 4 people, that can come up with an overall look and then farm out teh jobs to the rest of the artists. And those 4 should prefrablie all do Differnt style work, that way, once they have somthing there happy with, everybody should be happy! And you'll have the best of both worlds! And the best of eachs talent!

Ofcourse in real life this is unlikly to happen... but still it would be nice.

Once i release my map on teh weekend, ill start doing some art for the gui i think... (and then suddelny lots will appear and there will be a huge flame war over whos is best again, and some will lose there lives on the way, ect... but hay, were used to taht here now i think. :-) )

I actually messed around with CEGUI and tried making a new looknfeel, however, I soon found that I have to make a DLL file at some point to even get a new looknfeel to work properly, and I don't even know how to go about doing that. If someone could point me in the right direction here as far as what I need to do for the DLL, I could probably get my hands on a compiler and start making some sort of TA themed looknfeel, or something.

Well... not exactly like that... but you get the idea... simple yet effective... maybe with the crazy lines of glowing text and stuff... ya know?

That, while not particularily functional, would atleast be interesting to see.

Awh... well... uhm... maybe if the text was yellow instead... there's no such thing as Yellow/Green color Blind, Rights? do we have any colorblind folks who could let us know? Did color blind people have trouble with the "matrixy" scenes in the matrix? really... I'm kinda curiouse.
