Spring RTS Engine

Ok I've waited long enough and I'm so curious I will ask. Hoi, why do you want to do this? Any cell phone can play an mp3. I'm sure greeting cards will soon play mp3s. Why midi?

I have an mp3 with some piano playing, there's no sheet music availible (Really, don't say use google, I already did.), but I want to learn it, so if I convert it to a midi I can get it into synthesia and check the notes, it's not a very complicated song, but complicated and long enough to not be able to learn it by ear, the convertion doesn't has to be perfect, I can make some adjustments myself, but I need something to start with.

I think in really simple cases it could be possible though, e.g. monotonic note sequences, with simple timing etc.

If you had some 500 hour tune (for example autogenerated) then there may be valid reasons for needing an automated solution. It's just very hard in the more general case when you have polyphonic tunes, multiple instruments with different harmonic characteristics, percussion, possibly vocal stylings etc.

A separate question then is what does WredXIII consider to be the difference between transcoding and converting? Surely transcoding is a specific type of converting, given the word 'converting' is so general...

The general answer that no, you cannot practically convert wav/mp3 to midi.

Hoi, where can I find a copy of your mp3 to transcode? I will just do it for you, there's no point in explaining myself to others how. I just want to help you out, not criticize others ideas (which is what some people around here do.)

Can VLC transcode video formats, or just audio?

BTW, it's not possible to transcode to midi. In theory you can convert, but it's not an easy conversion. Hoi, link the MP3, I'm sure there's a few people who can either find a score for it, or can score it themselfs.

Do you understand the difference between midi and MP3? They aren't like file formats. MP3's work based on holding sound wave information, whereas midi contains notation data. You can't trans code from one to the other, there are no similarities for the formats to work based off of.

It's relitively easy to convert from midi to MP3, because when a midi plays it creates a sound wave that can easily be recorded, but the reverse is quite difficult, because midi has absolutely no methods for dealing with any inaccuracy or deviation of notation. If the sound wave in question isn't perfectly crisp and precise it's very difficult to build a midi to accurately mimic it via any automated process.
