and how do you give one cent? Seriously, Fileplanet started offering an OPTIONAL pay for faster downloads and people have hated it ever since.

we have 6?

You can't expect to cover hosting with ads in an environment with 6 similar file hosts... UF could do it because it was the only file host, but now there is simply too much bandwidth provided.

+1 if you can't afford it perhaps you need to get out of the business. Ideally we would have some system by which the load was distributed across multiple mirrors like UF, only issue being that the main server could not go down like UF.

If i manage to scrape something together i will donate!!!
What you need to do is get a simple flash music player like springplayersclub.com. That attracts alot of visitors. Aegis, can you work with jj?

Well, I have to say that it would be a shame if this site disappeared, since it seems to be the most polished one...

i was actually being mildly sarcastic
honestly though jj, if you're worried about bandwidth and storage, i could host it for you... since i have no spring mirror running at the moment...

yeah JJ's site should not list AND host. It is better to have the files mirrored elsewhere.

smoth, you seem to be quite against this site. Why are you posting here if you don't like it?
It's a donation, ffs. Not forced payment. You can still use the most polished, usable, and continually improved spring hosting site without paying a cent. So chill.
My own hosting site provides rates twice as cheap as jj's does, and guess what? I didn't throw a fit, but donated to keep it going as it is. Here's an example, see if you can stand up to it.

I just don't see why we should pay JJs bandwidth costs when there's at least 12TB+ of unused bandwidth every month at rival hosting sites.

That's the thing, you don't have to. Go and sit with your 12tb of bandwidth and be content.
PS. jj's site gives links to other sites for downloading, if you ever took a look at it. That could be improved though, but I already PM'd that to him.

jj wrote:det wrote:Where is it hosted? How much bandwidth are you using monthly?
it is hosted @ helderhosting.nl
you can see the used bandwidth at the bottom of the site (100GB total)
Wow, you've only used 100GB for all the stuff you hosted there? I used 85GB bandwidth last month for caspring.org. Most of that (72GB) was just for downloads of the CA mod files. If I remember correctly, FU (not UF) was using a 1TB/mo for all Spring downloads when it was supported in the lobby.

Darkstars has currently used ~280GB already of this months billing cycle out of a total of 6120 GB which increases by 40 GB each week. Dreamhost estimates our usage this cycle will be 402 GB across all sites on the account.

Good assumption you have there, care to actually consider that you might be incorrect about me? Don't make wild assumptions about people.

I wasn't upset with JJ, I am more upset with you. Of course, I would happen to be bringing up counter points out of experience or trying to help by pointing out the gripes I have already heard before in this community. Obviously I am out to fight it all.
Vadi wrote:My own hosting site provides rates twice as cheap as jj's does, and guess what? I didn't throw a fit, but donated to keep it going as it is. Here's an example, see if you can stand up to it.
Why would I care about your hosting site? what would I care if you threw a fit. At this point I may enjoy you throwing a fit. What am I standing up to? I have my own page.
Lets see most of the community refuses to use fileplanet with the reason being that it has an optional charge.
Prior to what you have seen with UF we had another site FileUniverse. The site ran out of bandwidth and Nexus the site admin was open to taking donations but he said that sadly people do not keep donating and thus the bandwidth would still have to be payed another way.
The files should not be hosted on the site which maintains all the links. The point of having mirrors is so the bandwidth can be distributed to different places.
Now that you are done looking for an enemy right away, I suggest you pull you head out of your ass and realize that some people are helping. Being a Yes man is not always needed.

I am also able to offer _tons_ of space and bandwidth (across two servers, also)... I hope you have a good mirroring system... It will be much easier instead of begging for donations.
