We're all here just to have fun, although there is the occasional peice of E-Drama, no one really gets hurt at the end (unless you're a bit sensitive).

Are the flame wars really that bad? i think they give this forum a bazazz, a spark that no other forum has, and i prefere it over 2 serious posts a day that no one cares about.

When people say EE sucks or gundam sucks or XTA sucks or AA is evil, they don't mean it, they know about personal preference, they know people play for other reasons, it's all just good fun.

Ofcourse there is the occaisonal post that's made to hurt the forum, but those rare posts are pretty easy to detect and i havn't seen any remotly near to that for a long time.

To conclude, ban the trolls, and keep the funsters, but learn to know the difference between them.
The problem is that people start flamewars in serius threads, and in the moment the administration locks the thread instead of banning the flamers. I think thats wrong.

Just remove flame posts from serious thread and dump them in a single off topic flamebait thread. Then you'll have what looks like a pretty hilarious flame war in that thread between trolls who are flaming about completely different people and things.

Release the thread after a year, un-edited, as "E-Drama, The Novel"

I hope that is sarcasm. If not, I don't think you realize how little 100 words is. :?

This man speaks wisdom. That way the serious discussion can continue, and so can the lulz.

I agree that slicing the flames out of the tread and putting it in some remote corner of the board is better than ban, lock or delete, because it doesn't result in as much resent from the people being "moderated", as they don't feel censored that much if they can keep their flametrolling in the split thread, and the original thread author might hopefully get his thread back on track, free of defiling.

We already do that. The problem is mostly that forum moderators view the forum much the way normal users do... we click on threads that are interesting, and we ignore threads that seem boring... If we tried to do it differently we'd be too uninterested with what we were doing to actually evaluate what was going on within the threads. However, this leaves certain sections of the community alot more open to flaming... The modding subsections are the worst, I&S can be bad too.

Another problem is we don't appoint enough moderators that are actively involved in drama around the community. There's a reasonable perception that someone who has been drawn into drama won't make a good moderator... There is some truth to it, but the reality of the situation is that if all our moderators are masters of avoiding drama then we'll never have anyone on the team who sees what's happening until things are way too late. We haven't developed enough diversity in our moderation squad, and IMO the result is a bit of cloud9 syndrome, we don't see enough of the community dynamic to be able to respond to the complaints.

SwiftSpear: What's I&S? :?

I think a lot of the drama stuff would be solved if people would just be polite and take others in good faith. There's a tendency for certain people to take criticism or generalisations personally, causing flamewars when there's really no need for it.

What you think a jail is? :)

People should remember that their freedom ends then it enters on conflict with the freedom of other people. Some people here seen to think their freedom is neverending.

I&S = Feature suggestions... Sorry about that, I'm used to calling it the "Idea's and Suggestions" forum from elsewhere. We just use a different identifier here.

As for your other suggestion... If everyone thought and acted the same the world would be an easy place, wouldn't it :) Unfortunately that's not really realistic, some people just won't act the way you want them to no matter what. Hell, if we could agree on a definition of respect, and agree to respect each other, that would be half the battle. Somehow I doubt that will be happening any time soon though.

For example... while, sure, it's kind of cute and amusing... I can't help but be a little peeved that this relatively serious topic has been ripped off course and is now primarily jokes about prison rape...
