its not about the raw numbers of polies. its the use of them. if the poly isnt contributing to the shape of the model, you dont really need it.

that was what the comment i made on your last model was about ian. not the number of polies, but the use of them.

The main reason it's so high is because it's made of poly-intensive parts: it's built of 12-sided cylinders and rims, and those spike/shovel things don't help (because there's a lot of them), and the twin gatlings bump it up further with all their barrels...

I still like my model considering I did it all by hand. I was just joking because it looked kinda complex.

There must be some stuff I can't see, then, adding a lot- but I wouldn't have ever guessed 2K, based on what I can see.

You can simplify a lot without sacrificing much detail, should be possible to get it down below the 1k mark.

That's pretty much where I'm at, on that one- even going down to cubes on the guns, aside from the outer edges, would be acceptable, at the detail level. Meh, all stuff I can fix while editing it so that it looks Overmind...

I'll toss it in with my next batch of models.

wolf, we probably need a stepped on infantry model too then, maybe even some bones for heaps after the bodies get to smashed up...

Renault FT-17, WW1 era French tank.

i quite strongly dislike the turret. ill probably just throw the whole thing away.

The turret looks fine, although there's a mistake with it. The sides of the turret should have parallel ends (currently you have the top edge inclining gradually towards the back). It's mainly the rounde top of the turret which is unvenly shaped and weighted towards the rear. Also, try a smaller copula.

Otherwise, its a good model of a very shitty tank. :)

Don't be so tough on this tank. It's that small barely moving tin can that set the current of tank design the way it's now. FT-17 is the first tank utilizing what is called 'classical tank composition': it has a 360 degree rotating turret (where its main weapon is), it has different compartments (crew is separated from the engine). It was the first (mass-produced) tank to have a real gun (not another MG) in a rotating turret! Plus, that thing took part in both world wars - which other tank did that?
Compare that to British Mk.<something> WW1 tank or German A7V and see what 'shitty tank' really means ;)

That is very cool. It can grind units to a pulp while running them over and blasting them to bits...

Lovely!

Some pictures from one of the sides in a little project of mine. The aesthetic I'm aiming for is "Not real world units, but looks as if they could be real world units".
I've chosen to URL to the images instead of including them here, since they're so many (it's about a meg in total).

http://spring.hairminator.com/apc_chassis.jpg

First out is an APC chassis and its variants. Top left to right: Standard vanilla APC with some sort of autocannon. Supply truck version (I want to implement some sort of ammo system if and when I ever get around to churning out something playable from this). Mobile SAM. Light MLRS. Mobile Radar.

http://spring.hairminator.com/mbt.jpg
http://spring.hairminator.com/mbt_2.jpg

These are two Main Battle Tanks. The first one is more of a close quarters kind of unit, with high explosive area effect rounds. The second one is a long range (LOS) kind of deal, whose primary drawback would be a small ammosupply.

http://spring.hairminator.com/transport_helos.jpg

Moving on to aircraft, this is a heavy lift helicopter. Its primary purpose would be airborne ammo supply and unit transport. The bottom version is meant for maritime patrol, and is equipped with sonar and 4 x torpedoes (the torpedo models are placeholders).

http://spring.hairminator.com/observati ... unship.jpg

This a recon helicopter, with its light gunship version on the right. Based heavily on the German BO 105 (or Hkp 9 in the Swedish Airforce), and the American Kiowa. Meant as a Tech Lvl 1 spotter unit.

http://spring.hairminator.com/gunship.jpg

And here is the main gunship unit. Based on the Sikorsky S-67 in terms of design (and purpose).

http://spring.hairminator.com/light_attack_plane.jpg

This is a light attack/fighter plane. One of the main things (except ammo) in this project would be mission loadouts for aircraft. Instead of building one kind of plane for each task, you get them back to base and give them another set of weapons, suitable for the task of the moment. So this one would triple as light battlefield support (think gunpods/rockets), light bomber (maybe 6 x 250 kg bombs), or light fighter (some short range heat seekers or something).

http://spring.hairminator.com/multirole_strike.jpg

This aircraft would be similar in its multirole nature, but with substantially more carrying capacity, armour, speed and agility.

So there you go. None of this is textured or ingame. The general outline for the actual game is written down, and I'm kind of pepped for it at the moment, but knowing myself I'll probably lose enthusiasm and drop the ball. And in that case I'll probably just release the models to the community.

Very good work there, I'm really interested in the tanks though, they really seem similar to my designs for a mod I was working on, good work. :D

Whatever happened to your WW2 mod, Bruce?

Image

Not a work in progress, I JUST finished it 5 minutes ago, been working on it all night... (it's a P-51 Mustang, btw)

Thanks to Yuri for the epic model. There are some things about it (the texture) I don't like, though. First, there should only be one USAAF symbol, on the top left wing (and another on the bottom right) but I didnt think of this while setting up the uvmap so oh well. Another thing, it's the first plane I've done and it was wretched to do the symbol on the sides of the fuselage - if you ever get the mod and look at the texture map of this thing you'll see why. Lastly I didnt spend as much artistic effort on the actual texture... I was just too happy to have the thing done after so long to want to have to go and do things like bevel panel lines and whatnot...

Needs to make the propeller blur.. LUA? or is there some simpler way?

Got pushed to the side when I realised I couldn't do what I wanted, lua might have changed that. That and I'm at uni now.

I like the mustang, hope you can do something decent with the propellers so it doesn't look like a toy.

My religion (orthodox scientology) is against planar faces.
Nah, but I know. Although a lot of the faces in the pictures look non planar, they actually aren't (fixed a lot of them). But I'll sort out the rest with some tesselation and what not. I saved the tesselation for later so the images would be clearer.
