150m, about half of what it cost to create IIRC. As in, the movie itself cost 300m, plus 150m for marketing.

I am glad that they didn't place more importance on making the video game version of it any good, because then I would want to play it, and at the same time not want to rape my memories of the Perfection.

Apparently there is a sequel in production, with many of the actors/actresses optioned for a second sequel. Creative One, keep away from George Lucas and Michael Bay, as well as the spirit they represent.

The movie is good but haven't we reached the over hyped point yet?
like with the Dark knight where people got sick of all the praise it was getting and pretended to hate it?

There was a lot of pre-release skepticism from critics combined with the manufactured hype, and this secret sauce created the ideal mixture to make people want to see a movie because of the buzz, but without expecting too much from it.

Since we've all been courteously taught by George Lucas to never expect too much from the next movie in a series, the skepticism will remain for Avatar 2. If it's good as well though, Avatar 3 is going to be just completely ****ed. They'll have to make it flawlessly holographic or something. With those seats that move in sync with the movie.

Knorke, where do you live? I'm going to be in your neighborhood tomorrow so I thought I'd drop by. With pizza... and money. If possible everyone you've ever known should be there too. Thanks.

Attention: at the end of this post there is a spoiler about Knights of the Old Republic.

Am I the only one that didn't see them as cat-like in the slightest? They share some traits, I guess... they're... athletic and stuff. And have tails. They struck me as more reptilian or a reptile-human-panther-wolf crossbreed. No fur, no reverse-jointed legs, hands instead of paws, totally different ears, bipedal, etc...

It's been (almost exactly) a day already and I have a terrible memory, maybe I'm forgetting things. But I think that's what made them seem so unique to me: I really couldn't identify them with a particular species. To date, most sci-fi species have usually been "human-with-X-facial-defect" or "human-mixed-with-...". Navi are very similar to humans, but at the same time so different from either humans or anything else that they really grab your attention. The movie's long enough and the CGI real enough that by the end, there's no question in your mind that you weren't merely watching a puppet show, simple robots, or other old-style computer generated imagery.

The way that they are presented with relatively reasonable and scientific explanations for their unusual size (low gravity), strength (hostile environment, carbon-reinforced skeleton), and abilities is also very much appreciated. It doesn't hold you by the hand the whole way, it doesn't treat you like a child. It doesn't introduce some plot point that immediately jumps out at you as "the thing they're going to pull a deus-ex-machina with later on", but at the same time they don't go the other way and just pull something out of their ass because the writing staff couldn't come up with anything better. I feel like I watched a grown-up movie when I've been used to Disney shite. The movie teaches you about the Navi and then lets you watch them try to overcome a situation they find themselves in.

Warning: Spoiler about Knights of the Old Republic below. Also S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

This movie is the first time since finding out that YOU are Revan that I've actually been actually startled by something's genius. I've heard other people say they saw it coming, or they weren't surprised, but for whatever reason I was completely, 100% in the dark until the mask came off in the cutscene. Not even a single neuron in my brain felt the slightest suspicion of anything even vaguely similar, probably in large part due to the fact that I wasn't playing the game expecting a good story. This was Star Wars after all, it's not a franchise at its peak. My eyes widened and my jaw actually dropped, just like on TV. Unfortunately, since STALKER was the game I played right after KOTOR, I literally knew from the instant I first read on my PDA "Kill Strelok" exactly what the game's "big reveal" was going to be.

Here's hoping for a couple more genuinely excellent movies or games in the new decade.

I saw it with my gf yesterday (second time for me) and uh she... she was kinda sick towards the end of it, I guess the 3D and the immersion where too much. :(

I wouldnt suggest that, its much better with the 3d stuff going on. Watch the 3D version, then a trailer or something soon afterwards at home, and youll laugh at how crappy it looks 2d

fff.

over here we have "colossus" theatres which are the ones with imax and imax 3d... and they are all in the suburbs, cost way too much, and are surrounded by crowds of 14 year old gangsters who apparently have nowhere better to be.

although... ive noticed the bigtime praise in this thread, and if you're convinced the 3d version is worth the extra dough, then i'll go.

but if i go you for-sure have to make me a city map concept.

*edit : aww hells yes, i can see it downtown, amongst crowds of scene kids*

at minimum you must see this movie in 3d, otherwise youll be completly disapointed. The story isnt something to write home about and theres so many plots holes and cliches.

Just saw it (finally the IMAX wasn't sold out).

Visuals: 10/10 - best I've ever seen in a movie, ever.
Plot: 0/10 - dreadful.
Average: 5/10

Next time I watch this movie it will be on mute. On my 3D monitor. That's right. 8)
