MSN does not _need_ IE. But IE's proxy settings are computer wide, thus MSN, Outlook ect will not work. Programs that use their own proxy settings (Firefox, Eudora) will work though.

by removing it from the windows components. Go into your control panel, then add/remove programs and you can remove the IE component from your copy of windows

Under add/remove windows components XD

I know, I know. Technically not uninstalled it, but its disabled it completely. It doesn't run for anything that calls for a net browser.

yeah... click start>run>iexplore ... evil eh?

and y'all are being a litle silly... the proxy settings arn't part of IE technically, they are in the Internet Options section of Control Panel... there just happens to be a link to that CP in the tool menu of IE...

Sure you do, and the problem is that you are using Internet Explorer instead of Opera or Firefox  .

And you can't remove nor disable IE from Windows. It just seems like but it isn't true. For example, it will still open IE windows from the program Messenger.
And, for example, when an aplication crashes, it opens that uber annoying window asking if you want to send a crash report (so Microsoft knows everything about you, like what aplications you usually use), even if you disable that service it will still open those stupid freaking things.

Not every one likes Gaim, I know I don't.

I use MSN (Live + A-Patch removing most of the icons/adds) because I don't use another IM client. If I used ICQ, AIM and MSN I may consider using just one client but it would not be Gaim, more towards Trillian.

Wouldn't know about MSN popup for hotmail. I've got an older hotmail account and so can access via outlook :)

All hotmail accounts can be access though outlook, he means if you click a link in MSN that some one has sent you or such, it will open in iexplore rather then your default browser. Although, this is not the case in the new MSN Live (which just went Open Beta.)
