Div overlaid in white with alpha transparency would fix that.

you probably think even having a customisable author column is dangerously liberal- if you had your way, a portrait of adolf hitler would be raised in place of our avatars and we would all submit to the facist will of the moderator party

Just place a gradient image blending the pic into the background of the forum background colour. Could be tricky though as each alternate post has the other shade.
