Fusebox

Post by AF »

I'm fucking fuming right now.

My landlady didnt like the noise my main computer made so I moved it out of the living room into the guest room, fair dos it was in the room above her bedroom and she has sensitive hearing.

So she says its all good she cant hear it anymore and ive told her I need to do things for work.

So this evening she decides that actually she CAN hear it, and its keeping her awake and its really loud. She tells me ( not asks me ) to turn it off and says Ill have no friends that im to do work stuff in the day time.

So I'm on my computer, and all of a sudden everything goes black. She's turned it off by the fuse box without warning me. She then keeps it off for half an hour till I tell her everything in the freezer goes mouldy after she threatens to do it again if I turn the thing back on.

Argggh she's driving me mad. I leave dishes to soak and she washes them while im asleep or at work, even takes them off me and washes them and refuses to let me do it, even saying 'its my job', then complains days later im not washing my dishes and I'm taking libertys. She complained I wasnt cleaning the carpet in one of my rooms even though Id bought new flooring and the carpet was being binned in 2 days. She complains about my power usage when she puts an individual tea towel on a full hot was cycle then in the drier on hot for 2 hours.

If there is anybody in the liverpool area who can point me towards a flat that beats 250 all bills inclusive, or anybody with a big house willing to accomodate, or anyone who has a truckload of spare UPS I can have for my computer, do give me a bell.

Water cool the box, if all else fails. Simplest way to silence it, and it's reasonably cheap and easy.

(moderator merge double posted thread?)

How much would that cost? Wont I have to drill through my case?

Less than moving, probably. But your landlady sounds awful, frankly.

Depends. Do you have any slots free? External water kits can usually just run through an empty PCI slot.

If its vibration noise, you could always just stick a rubber mat underneath it.

Fan noise, see smoth, although I've always had a fear of user-installed water cooling, as any fault fucks your system with no insurance.

The feet are rubber, shes looking for ways to get at me, still is now Ive told her Im moving out even, she never had an issue wiht it for months and now its become a huge thing, its all tosh.

I asked for my rent back this mornign in a note, when I got in the note said shed developed 'food poisoning' so she couldnt get the money, nonsense since she only eats jam sandwiches and cups of tea.Im the only one who ever cooks anything so there's nowhere she could have gotten it from and so fast

buy eggcrate foam and put it around ure comp

alternatively tell that bitch to turn on a fan. white noise blocks out other noises by increasing the threshold of your brain's hearing tolerance

I wouldn't go for that unless your PC is really High-End as you don't need a watercooling to get a Silent-PC. The question is though what components you actually have. If you're like using a boxed cooler on your CPU and the standard graphics card fan then it's no wonder that your PC is quite loud...

Getting alternative (air) coolers that work up to just noticeable when putting your ear next to them isn't that much of a problem and not that much expensive (depending on what you want to do it's no problem of staying below 100 Ôé¼)..

hmm well I have a gf8800GTS 640mb and Im using the stock intel fan IIRC, I got 2 extra case fans at the front on the low setting and a 120mm fan at the back and a small one on the side

What fans and whatnot would you reccomend?

Well very good CPU-Coolers for example are the Noctua UH-12P or the Scythe Mugen 2 (where the Noctua is more expensive but has a minimal better cooling power plus the possibly greatest fan on the market in terms of noise at low rpms plus you also get a very good thermal paste)...

For your graphics card go for an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev.2 together with a nice and silent fan like a Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E which you can tie to the cooler e.g. via cabel clips or whatever you come up with (warning: doing so will make you lose your warranty on the card). Just as for the case fans you also might want to get some potentiometers to put their rotations down if you can't control the speed otherwise (might need some testing for the GPU but the case fans should easily be able to perform at just 800rpm or even less)...

I'd also completely remove that side case fan. Those give you no measurable overall advantage plus in some occasions they even can be counter productive. One fan down at the front blowing air in and another fan at the top of your cases back blowing air out together with your power supply is totally sufficent - even for system with quite some powerful hardware. Also make sure you use rubber buffers for installing your fans to your case...

Another thing are HDDs. While they shouldn't be the main noise creators they probably create the most annoying noises. So it's a good idea to either put them in boxes or at least use some vibration absorbers. In the end this is a bit up to the the noise level you want to get down to, your numbers of HDDs and your budget. If you just have a single hard disc I'd recommend something like a Scythe Quiet Drive (ideally put on a piece of foam or something on your cases bottom and this way not attached to the case directly). Those are pretty expensive though and if you have multiple HDDs it's expensive and you might run out of slots to install your drives (as they use a standard 5,25" slot). Just using those vibration absorbers helps a lot too - especially if you have got a leightweight aluminium case. They still will eat up your slots though and if you have more than 2 HDDs around I'd have a look at their temperatures - you might want to put another fan there for the hot summer days. One or two HDDs should work up there in the 5,25" slots without any problems...

AF, if you download more RAM it allows your computer to run alot cooler, as your computer does not have to over stretch itself as i can clearly see your doing.

Alternatively you could switch to vista 32bit as that would also help your computer run quieter.

If all else fails, remove all your fans so that it makes no noise at all.

Ignore all above bullshit and snakeoil and just buy an Antec P183 case then move your kit into that. You can check out http://silentpcreview.com/ for further protips - that site is the only reliable website for information on this stuff. Also call the government tenancy bureau and ask what your rights are. Your walls must be paper thin. Either that or your landlady is mental

Move to the Wirral. Or Chester. Image More space for less money if you can do the commute (which in my experience is relatively trivial)

I once had a cranky old landlady like that (and she was English too!). After moving in and finally getting settled (I had my own bedroom and ------- in the top floor of the house), she springs it on me that I'm not allowed to leave my computer on when I leave the house because "it could start a fire." And more crap like that. Thankfully I was only living there for four months. But reading your post brought back memories. It was a lesson learned.
