Display goes black/green when I press Shift (ATI 3850)
Hello,
I just bought the new ATI 3850 video card to replace my X1800.
But now I have some graphical issues with my favorite game :
- when I press Shift, sometimes my screen goes black or green (depends of the map)
- I can't see shadows
- some of the textures appear to be missing : the texture that appears on the ground under all the facotries is now only a grey square.
and a few other glitches (flickering texture when units/buildings are 80%-100% built)

*_* Spring is your favourite game and you went and bought an ATI card?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Are you mad?!?!!?!?!?
I would highly reccomend you wait 3 years or later before even looking at Vista or any of its successors. Otherwise you're in for a world of pain with those ATI gfx drivers.
In the mean time could you run the svn build installers from buildbot and verify what issues are fixed and which arent aside from the one trepan mentioned?

The grey square bug is gone in the last svn, but I still have the others.
Since I got none of these with my X1800xt I think it's related to drivers and not very much to spring.
ATI is always better at the overall, and although I like Spring, I also like watching HD movies with great image quality for example.

I doubt that. In my experience ATI has pushed for DirectX, and nvidia has matched them else where or done better. Their primary selling point is the price tag bang for bucks stuff that also got AMD to second stage in the cpu industry.
Its too late now anyway you've got the card, just don't make the same mistake again.
btw could you tell us your average framerates at minimum settings? The complaints on the geforce 8 cards and framerates should also apply to 2xxx and 3xxx ATI cards as they too shifted to a more parallelized architecture, whereas nvidia shaders have higher clockspeeds and ATI makes up by having lower clocked shaders, but in greater numbers, which technically should make performance even worse than the gf8 due to the increased parallel processing.

Sorry to say that, but then you have no experience.
Performance speaking, before the 8000 series, ATI has always been ahead Nvidia.
X1800 and X1900 series did age MUCH better than their 7800/7900 counterparts...
And because you have a Nvidia card and your Nvidia-Spring-water-rendering-made-on-nvidia-card doesn't work on ATI doesn't mean that these cards are crap...
My post was to try to find if other users experienced similar problems with their (nvidia or ati) cards, and so far no one did (and I didn't aswell on my ATI X1800). Then I think it's driver related and I guess I can forgive it to a card which didn't exist 2 weeks ago, and hope it gets fixed quickly instead of wasting 100├óÔÇÜ┬¼ more for a 8800GT for <10% performance increase.
About your request, what exactly are minimal settings? All sliders to the left and boxes unchecked?

It seems it is useless to convince you. But don't expect any support for your crap card. Neither expect that ATI will fix their @#$&@ drivers (the bugs are years old ...). So if you want that it get fixed, then learn c and opengl and see those ati bugs yourself and try to fix them (if possible at all). Btw most/all spring devs have geforces ...albon wrote:Sorry to say that, but then you have no experience.

ahem. I have nvidia cards yes and I also have ati cards to match, infact these words are being displayed by an ATI gpu as I type.
To answer your x1900 stuff, I don't consider those directly comparable to the 7900 etc. If the 7900 is generation 1 and the 8800 is generation 2 then the x1900 is generation 1.5. While ATI was messing around manufacturing the 1900 the nvidia guys where sorting out the 8xxx series and it shows. the 2xxx series underperformed what was promised by a considerable margin and the 8xxx series crushed them.
For examples of ATIs failures outside of Directx I point you to their Vista and linux drivers. I also point you to the slew of OpenGL issues and horrific performance and support for the industry standard.
But it's your loss if you won't consider nvidia cards.
But, performance under the latest ATI cards should suffer from the same fundamental flaws as the gf8, so yes, disable all the fancy graphical effects, basic water, no shadows or reflections.

Wow, if that's not a childish reaction.jK wrote: It seems it is useless to convince you. But don't expect any support for your crap card.
Hopefully profesional developers don't react like that and I can play all commercial Open GL games without a single bug on my 3850, and much smoother than on the price equivalent Nvidia card, the crappy 8600...
On the opposite, my other fav. game is Arma, which ran like total SHIT for months on the 8800GTS 320Mb of my bro. I guess NV didn't bother fixing bugs on that almost unknown game.
About minimal FPS, on 1280x1024 I watched the replay of my last CA game 5vs5 and it never drops under 200fps.
Edit: this is actually hilarous, I just went through some other posts on the forum and every time someone reports a bug with ATI he's being cursed/flamed at for his noobiness, and on the other hand I saw also "DO NOT UPGRADE TO 8800 SERIES THEY PHAIL @ SPRING

Well, that's something...
We just need devs with time + ATIs + OpenGL skills. Until that happens, only nvidia bugs will be fixed, and all new graphical features will be developed for nvidia cards.
If you report ATI bugs in our bug tracking system, there are no nubs there who flame you for having an ATI (though we still may not be able to do anything about it for above reasons).
Also, can we please not let this topic derail in ATI vs nVidia flamewars? Just make a new thread for that (in offtopic!), thanks.

Yes that's correct, 8 series nvidia card phail for spring almost as badly as ATI, for the same reasons that tobi mentions.albon wrote: Edit: this is actually hilarous, I just went through some other posts on the forum and every time someone reports a bug with ATI he's being cursed/flamed at for his noobiness, and on the other hand I saw also "DO NOT UPGRADE TO 8800 SERIES THEY PHAIL @ SPRING((((((((("

quality and performance of OpenGL for ATI cards risen
since AMD went opensource with nix drivers and released lot of technical info for R5xx cards and up ...
several reviews shows latest drivers fixed the gap between nvidia and amd.ati in performance field
3850/3870 are nice cards for theirs price and claiming them to be shitty is pure flame

Some tips
I got exactly the same problem. HD3850 with disappearing textures, and I am aware that this is driver problem. Try installing the Crysis Hotfix drivers - it helped a bit, textures still disapear, but not flashing/vibrating anymore.
I observed that in "single" player - host a game and play against a bot - i dont have this problem. ( or i didnt play long enough, cos it comes out right at the first mex placement )
Try experimenting with "tripple buffering", 16 vs. 24 bit Z-buffer in CCC.
I found it better with 16 bit, but problem still exists.
In game fix: Select a unit different than commander, and pess shift then order to move - it always helps.
I used to underline the metal spots so i can see where to place the mexes...
