What's the catch?

It's free to play, how do they make profit?

Is it pay to win or only aesthetic / pay for faster unlocks of things you can unlock with just playing without pay?

After some quick google searching, it seems it will be mirco-transaction driven but details are not yet released.

http://firefall-wiki.com/wiki/index.php ... ansactions

If they are smart, they will just do what TF2 does. Hats, anyone?

In short - Firefall will be a free-to-play game with micro-transactions the full details of which are yet to be provided. However the item store (as it is also referred to as in other games) will not contain any gameplay changing purchases. IE: battleframes etc. Merely cosmetic upgrades and possible XP boosts etc.

Seems it won't be pay to win, fingers crossed though. I wouldn't play pay to win even if it's free.

Tribes-ish mmo fps. (Classes, jetpacks and quite a lot of non-hitscan weaponry)

You run around an alien infested environment, trying to mine the resources you need to get better toys by calling down "thumpers"- automated mining platforms. The insectoid horde seem to react to the seismic activity with enthusiasm, and you defend the thumper until either it fills, it is destroyed, or you manually leave it because you can no longer hold it.

Apparently there are some evil humanoid alien types with guns, but I am yet to encounter them.

Got my invite couple weeks ago, the gameplay is pretty sweet, but for a MMO it really lacks contents: I still don't understand how the game is less advanced that in the videos from two years ago.

Bug me on Steam or Spring-Lobby / IRC so we can play together.

Rattle the main reason I posted here was to populate my invite reservation list for when they eventually do become available, consider yours earmarked.

Z I don't think I have you on my Steam list, dont have a Spring Lobby client installed atm, feel free to add Pintle39 on steam and msg me if you want a game, or hop onto Spring's Mumble Server, as I am often there.

So it's PVE Tribes?

... the game sounds really interesting, but the fanartish splash-page, StarCraftRipOff logo, and stripperiffic character are all a pretty big turn-off on the web-site.

The tribes analogy only really stretches to the weapon set and "it has jetpacks" - there is no skiing, and no vehicles that I have seen so far.

It is almost more like Killing Floor, or some other kind of "gun game" survival set piece farmathon. There are PvP terminals that I presume are portals to instanced matches or arena or something, I have not tried them yet, will probably do so in the next hour or so.

No it's not. Tribes is fast paced & hard core, in tribes the target is three pixels and moving fast while yourself is skying & jetpacking erratically. Firefall is much more relaxed. Though it's still nice to have a FPS MMO.

The video lies. If you talk about this video, it's only true up to 4:35. There is no shuttle, no vehicle, no mammoth-like mob, and the map ends at the jungle behind the beach, all the rocky part above is missing. Even the jungle is quite a dead place, only the beach has mobs roaming. The part where the city is attacked is not there too. Even the gear menu is not as sexy as in the video. Half of what we see in that other video is missing too.

It leads you to something that is just like Team Fortress 2, but prolly not as good.

Actually I meant the cinematic trailer...

Not the best to get a feel for the actual game, huh?

I'll watch some gameplay trailers soon.

I got my beta invite, it's very good but still VEEERRRY rough around the edges and buggy. Shows tons of promise, as they've successfully merged the class-based shooter with the zombie horde shooter with the leveling/item-crafting of an MMO. But still needs aloooot of work...

gonna go play it now...

Wow, got into the beta :-)

So I don't have a "good" computer by today's standards, but I can usually play most games alright if at least on a low resolution. This game is either very laggy or has some serious frame drops for me. Anyone else notice this? Textures are like constantly loading in too, even while idle...

Having done some reading, open world pvp is "a question of when, not if" and there is already a vehicles section in the control menu, suffice to say, this beta is far from feature complete.

The instanced PvP is pretty much a meh arena shooter atm, it absolutely pales in comparison to Tribes.

Given that this will be free to play, and the way the open world co-operative exploration/survival dynamic looks to be progressing, I think this game could be epic.

There sure is some fun to be had yet if any game is going to be epic my bets are still on planetside 2. Should be going into beta within the next 2 months.
