Is there a way I can port maps or do I have to just recreate them?

OTA heightmaps are 20 kinds of screwed up. Moreover, OTA maps never had any real height to them. It was all an optical illusion. To make matters worse, many of the heightmap tiles are not at the same base height. Didn't matter in OTA, because the height variances are extremely slight so it was unnoticeable. In spring = big problem. These are issues that you will struggle with.

Moreover, because of the above facts, the texture will not fit the heightmap perfectly (or maybe not well at all).

What OTA map are you thinking of? Maybe you could get someone here to remake it (maybe it's already been remade).

It is fairly easy to export heightmap and texture of a TA map then import them in Spring's mapconv, but the result is terribly ugly.

If you want a decent looking port, the best is to gather concept and layout ideas from your memories of TA maps and recreate them from scratch.

FWIW, TA3D can load OTA maps directly, so you can judge how they would look compared to Spring's offerings.

Yes but no, TA maps look much prettier in TA3D than they would in Spring.

I think TA3D does some magic with the texture, stretching and squashing it on cliffs, to make it fit better the heightmap.

Which map do you have in mind?

I did a spring version of Anteer Strait and Center Command, and I am also working on one of John's Pond.

You can have a look at them and critisise the end result. Especially the sharp contrasts and vivid colours look quite blunted when doing with Carrara™.

serge you should check out springmapedit; if you've access to that and an image editor you can quickly and effectively recreate these maps yourself (and as a mapper, you'll probably be thankful in hindsight for learning the tools)

in any case, cool designs

I have never seen craggy creek before seeing your screenshot. That's also the basis of what I used to draw the heightmap.
