About wrote:
Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends—and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right. There are five main paths corresponding to the 5 main female characters, each path following the storyline pertaining to that character.

This little gem is many kinds of awesome. A thought provoking and often times hilarious story told in a fitting way.

Also, it's free.

(from my understanding it is released entirely under creative commons)

4channers making a dating sim / eroge about disabled girls.

Straddling the line between humanizing and fetishizing the disabled. The internet is crazy.

surely the human race was way more sane before the sumOfAllParts came together in the tube? Else, there seems to be a lot leftout in history books.. gonna do a interview with the dead one day.

Not only did he shoot us, but after we lay there in the massgrave, he came, lowered his pants and spread his anus.
"GOTASEE"this he said.

Hell, i reported the idealisation of olden-time-bugs a thousand times on gods mantis, why does it never get fixxed. Lousy dev, just before he commited first, he thinks he can now stop doing anything, since written recordings appeared.

It hardly qualifies as a dating sim...Visual Novel is just about right.

Walls and walls of text, but it's definitely beautiful, heartwarming stuff. I figure most people here are too jaded for that kinda stuff (which is why I didn't make a thread here), but if you aren't then you should definitely give it a try.

because nerds love the weak helpless type.. it's why the 'dere types are so popular. Otaku don't like a strong woman.. then again, I don't think Grace Jones is hot.. but just saying. Take Kimi Ga, they have the helpless girl with not tits and the brash one has huge knockers.. gotta give her something to offset the attitude..(even then she is 'dere)

personally I like Midori in green green and yuna in maburaho.. don't get me wrong, I loved kimiga but after years of anime, I have begun to get the feeling that otaku are spineless.

You'll like KS then. Of the five paths (I've only played four, so can't comment on the last), two of them make a point of deconstructing the "broken bird needs cuddling and protecting" trope so hard. In the third, the guy is (arguably) the needy, dependent one.
(Oh, and he pretty much gets dominated in the fourth. It's kind of complicated, you'll have to see it for yourself.)

Maybe because I had to use google several times to even begin to grasp what you're talking about hints at how past experience made you prejudiced on this topic.

Creators of this piece obviously took great care to sensibly handle a hard subject. I find it to be quite classy and would hardly call it a dating sim. The choices you get to make are few and far in between, their results obscured to make you explore different story branches rather than to give a feeling of active participation in the story.

At least that's how it seems to me, that you are more of an curious observer to a tale of someone else rather than being the actual actor. For example I managed to 'lose' because the main character decided to be an ass, not by random chance but because of subtle events leading up the the point which caught me as a refreshing surprise.

I disagree. Most harem animes include one kick-ass firecracker for the guys who want a lady with some backbone. I mean, how many dudes fantasize about Samus or Tomb Raider or some other heavily armed chick with guns? Hardly the weak, helpless types.

From a friend showing me various asian cartoons I learned something that I could apply to this!

this phrase refers to the area of exposed thigh when a girl is wearing a short skirt and thigh high socks.
The 'ideal' skirt:thigh:sock above knee ratio is 4:2.5:1

fanservice: yep, they all are. Even old anime like gundam. Have you seen godannar? Hilarious amounts of fanservice, even the mecha have a few service moments.

I guess this is the time were i start to fanpost about Crest of the Stars, the anime nobody knows about, and those who do, dont give a shit about. Reason, nearly no fanservice (when it came to important chars), some trong female characters, intersting story, space commbat only viewed form a tactical perspective.. it was unique.

I loved how that mad admiral of the house "beautifull insanity" spend the most important battle of the galactic war in a bathtube not giving a fuck.

Or admiral Spoor, man that lady was mean.. i spend the whole show feeling pity for her poor personal.
"They surrendered, at last moment-"
She completely mad, because she was wrong on tactics.
"How dare they..."
"We cant kill them they are prisoners of war. We have to transfer them to the capital!"
"Fine, first mate, order there ships to be stripped down, just lifesupport, no ftl travelling, they will travell to the capital to normal space.Calculate travell time."
"Ahem. 10.230 years!"
"Well, thats a little bit long!"
(That relieved look, when the firstmate thinks for a moment he maouvered her toward reason)
"Strip them off the gravity generators also.Recalc travell time!"
"ohem.. doesent make much diffrence.. 9800years"
"What are you saying, i just saved them 200 years! They shall be gratefull! Send them on there way! Destination Capital! Estimated Arrival: SomeLongNumberAE!"
Image
I had tears in my eyes! Even Revy of Black Lagoon doesent come close in here best moments.

I also liked that lovestory. It was not about power, it was about a clash of cultures, missunderstandings and the acceptance of things that cant be changed.

Ah yes, * of the stars series, why did you have to remind me!
That's probably one of the best anime shows I've watched, and I've watched a lot (I tell myself it helps with my japanese!).

Yes, crest of the starts had it all. Peak of a epoche.

Language Skills?
It helps, i speak japanese like a horny, 90 year old grown up in fond memorys of the edo period. Surely, if used on the streets it would get me instant support by the police for that mental handicapped, dangerous foreign devil.
