View topic - Decent texture tutorial for Gimp?

I tried using google but what is see is mainly shit for Units or out to dated which wont work properly

and there is no texture tutorials which i could use for Units

not an expert but:

Texturing is basically two stages, the first is UV Mapping (which is usually done in your modelling program) and the second is essentially basic image editing for which nearly any GIMP tutorial would apply. So the question is, what do you need a tutorial on specifically?

For "inspiration" you might want to try to download an existing Game and open up it's archive files using 7-zip and look at the actual texture images within... or page through the Ramdom WIP thread as there are many people who have posted in-progress UV-maps there.

Otherwise, perhaps if you could be a little more specific as to what it is you need help with you could be pointed in the right direction.




I recall a time when we not only had to use 10 year old tools to assemble 3DO texture atlases with custom pallets but then had to map them manually to each face of our models and the endless frustration/barrier to entry that this represented... it's a lot easier now and mostly comes down to your image-manipulation-ability.

No i dont need uv-mapping i mean i need tutorials to make nice textures like metal , window etc for vehicles, tanks etc

and i would like to make them from scratches and not copying from someone else textures

just google 'gimp tutorial' ? if u dont know how to use gimp, basicly every tut teach u something so u shouldnt look for 'metal' tuts only.

also, my small suggestion would be to start with some old photoshop, which should be easier to operate at start (ah these simple old ps's) and there is more ps tuts than gimp.

hard to give u satisfying answer tbh, u wont make proper texture after reading 'how to do metal texture' only.

to be honest u can make quite nice texture with simple tools, like outher glow and simple brush

pop up a pic of your model, maybe that'll make it easier for us helpful people

the easiest way to get stuff like metal going (not the best though) is to use pattern fill... so say you've drawn a metal plate on your texture, select it, and do this:

but i'm getting ahead of myself, you'll need some images to fill the patterns... some nice metal plates and stuff... find some here

ofc this is not the -best- way to do things, but its more-or-less how i do things (albiet a different program) but yeah post your model, that'll help

well, you've got some nice models to work with. i especially like the tracked rocket vehicle

firstly, viewtopic.php?f=9&t=22978 this is extremely helpful. it will put each uv section onto a different layer, so that you can change them all individually. it will help a ton with your workflow

i can't say much for my experiences drawing with gimp personally; its awesome for editing images (like cropping a map texture) but for actually drawing stuff i prefer other programs (i know lots of people like it, and its my noobishness that keeps me away from it)

so anyways, i cant offer much in terms of actual practical gimp-related information.

but i CAN paint part of your model and take pics for each step, would that help? i would be using paths rather than bitmaps though. if you think it might help, upload one of those models in .obj format along with whatever texture you may have completed so far

Yes it is based on V2 Rocket launcher from C&C RA 1 which is also based on Frog-7

Thanks for you offer but i don't want to bug you with and wasting time just for textures i would rather do those for myself

also all the textures i made doesn't look that great and i am always trying with some filters to make it look better but due to gimp sometimes bitches (especially on preview see bump-mapping) when i mark a specifid area to bump and not the whole pic

Don't look for application-specific tutorials on things like these. Just look up general tutorials on how to make something look good (there are loads of tutorials on texturing out there), and then if you need help on how to do a very specific action in GIMP, look it up separately.

I found emboss over some noise and then play with colors makes for decent* metal textures :roll:
Do you want realistic textures or something more abstract? ie for windows you could try a dark-blue to light-blue gradient..

Pfft, don't worry about it, it's not like he has any modeling stuff to get done <3 *runs and hides*

Edit: Oh btw, you can make some fairly convincing metal textures by using monochromatic noise and motion blur.
