Open source does not only mean free... it also means fully moddable and re-brandable. Which in turn means a faster dwarf fortress merge in with this type of game.
And that is something that I want and would not mind to actually code/create content (for merge)

its very moddable, lots of servers run mods that totally change the game...==Troy== wrote:smoth wrote:it is 10 eu... the guy is asking SOOO much. This game is entirely too addictive. And scary, too.

Troy your being an ass. You should be supporting indie devs.

It's extremely moddable. There comes a point where open source is a bit redundant... Not that I don't like OS, but it comes down to a question of what level of control as a game developer do you really need?==Troy== wrote:smoth wrote:I fail to understand the difference between OSS and closed source
Re: Minecraft free for a weekend
Because in order to modify something you need rights to what you do. After all whole communities are not built around modifying other peoples closed source games. Oh wait they are.==Troy== wrote:smoth wrote:I fail to understand the difference between OSS and closed source

for the record, this is one of the rare times I am doing this.Otherside wrote:Troy your being an ass. You should be supporting indie devs.

It is getting pretty offtopic, and I apologise for being a bit of a troll here, I do now wish to be one. I simply stated my opinion about the game, and my expectations. I think I will leave it there.
Edit : as being an ass and all, I donate all of my expendable income to OS projects, which I would otherwise be using to buy games...

The dev plans on releasing the sauce as public domain once his development cycle is complete.

Thanks. People like you make these forums a less flame-y place.==Troy== wrote:It is getting pretty offtopic, and I apologise for being a bit of a troll here, I do now wish to be one. I simply stated my opinion about the game, and my expectations. I think I will leave it there.

Indie games, arguably, can use funds more than open sourced games. The biggest resource open sourced games require is programmer/artist hours, and web service.==Troy== wrote:It is getting pretty offtopic, and I apologise for being a bit of a troll here, I do now wish to be one. At spring, while I was involved in the politics and powers, we never really used any of the funds donated to us. It was too unreliable to buy web space with, and it was too insubstantial to pay programming labor with.
With an indie developer, if he's good, funds paid to him directly equate to more programming and/or art hours he has to invest into the game. Because if you pay for his web service and living expenses maby he can go partime in his crappy job at best buy and focus on what he really likes doing.
As much as I like the ideal of open sourced, from my experience it just really doesn't work that well. The problems that really need to be solved the most are usually the ones avoided because they aren't "fun". Funds don't give programmers in OS projects incentive to tackle boring problems, but in indie projects they exactly do that.
Re: Minecraft free for a weekend
speaking from the perspective of someone who has been working for free for >4 years now. I hate working on gundam. There are days where I want to format my hd delete my svn and disappear from this place.
You need to go read the amount of flak notch gets. Gamers are entitlement junky assholes who think that your one change has ruined their world and will rage at you like you won't believe. They rage when the server has issues(even if you are fixing them) if you fix things they were exploiting and knew to be broken, they rage if you change the art style(borderlands) and in the case of open source try and fork your project the moment you fix the units they liked exploiting(see all the *A variants).
Game development is slavery and grind work. All the interesting features take maybe 10% the other 90% is you making all the assets, testing shit and getting it all together as a package. It is drudgery and a really fucking miserable thing. Don't tell me about the project you completed in a few weeks, that is diddle fuck. Real game development is like a bad marriage that you cannot leave for the sake of your children.
and you rage that he didn't open the source or asks a minor fee for his product.

...hey smoth. Come to think of it, you should try making some little games for cash. Like, tiny, fun, $5, 6-month projects. It'll be an exciting change of pace, and, who knows, something cool might happen!
Re: Minecraft free for a weekend
I would stop working on gundam.. and never go back. I want to finish this.
