How do I make some actual 'useful' saves. Becuase the way the game works is just that you save and once you quit DF your fort is lost forever with the exception of reclaim.
nile style is the easiest to begin with. the only problem is that the flooding of the cave river is uncontrollable, but it should be ok. once you learn how to use lever systems to create controllable floods you can basically do anything in this game ~~
download this and create a save folder on your data folder. then extract the zip there.

Anyway to make permenant back ups?
make a zip out of you data/save folder, when you lose your fort just extract it in your data/save. You can also send copies of your fortresses to your friends and/or play bloodline games.
If I were to make a channel right next to a river tile, would the river immediately follow the channel? And if it does, does it continue to pass my channel? And for simplicities sake, the channel is just 1x1.
then dont build a channel. Build 2 flood gates next to eachother it serves as a channel..Just remember to connect your first flood gate to the lever before putting down the second.
build the big C first , then make a bridge over it. then continue building from the MOUNTAIN side to the river, and you will need 2 floodgates in the mountain end to create enough drain to get water coming in.
I lost 2 people becuase of moods...1 had fey so it was a possible legendary, I just couldnt give her what she wanted. She wanted stones and rocks and gems and they were EVERYWHERE...Gah.
edit: currently on my third winter...
Goals this year: Complete Magma Forges, Begin Lava flood defence system to replace River Flood Defence System, increase military from 8-20 and arm them with Iron armor and copper weaponry (spears/sheilds/SPARTA), complete Noble rooms, complete a bed for everyone.
Yeah, I threw in the towel on my last game. Two people went fey, then berzerk and killed all my highly skilled specialists who mattered, i.e. the carpenters, masons and miners. I never dug up any ore, so my metalsmiths were throwing tantrums all over the place, and then the final straw came when when my peasants joined in, smashing the roads and preventing me from getting a needed trade shipment.
