XTA for Mac?

Post by Skribbblie »

Hello, comrades.

I was so excited when Spring actually came out for Mac, for real, but then I got it, and...
I don't know how to play any games or anything on it >.<! Namely, XTA, because who didn't like TA? Seriously now. :)

So if anyone could help explain how to even just be able to use a game on it, I would be very grateful.

Cheers.

Welcome.
As I do not have a mac I have no idea how good Spring/lobby now works on Mac. I will just assume it works okay now ;)
For XTA:
Sadly there is no fancy installerthing because XTA is only played by few people.
get xta here:
http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=21739
Just place the file in \My Documents\My Games\Spring\Games\ or ...\Spring\games\ folder (~/.spring/games/ on Linux/Unix/Mac).

Maps are sold separately:
http://springrts.com/wiki/Maps

The few players play pretty regular though.
In lobby type /join #xta to get to the games channel. There is not a game going on at any time of day and people might be afk but eventually games always start ;)

On Mac (as for Linux), games are to be located in ~/.spring/mods and the maps in ~/.spring/maps. You have to create these folders manually if they don't exist.

Well I guarantee they are in ".spring/mods" on Mac

For now, mostly for 2 reasons:
- currently Spring.app is not bundled with any lobby, hence there is no self update system and you would have to download maps and games again inside each new bundle version.
- assuming this was implemented, as a lobby developer, you would loose the ability to test your lobby on multiple versions of the engine at the same time.

Then again, worth considering for the future

I think I put everything in the right place for XTA to work, but when I press "Test Game", Spring crashes. I have a map, and the game, both in their respective positions. I'm a little unsure what to do about the "AI", so I set it to Commanders. It shows me the title screen (I guess that's what you could call it), then it immediately crashes. Help???
