This version is not yet deployed on the server. For online play, 0.78.2 is still needed.

After two weeks full of bug fixes, we think that the new version is ready to be released. As always, it provides lots of new features, performance improvements, new modding capabilities, tons of fixes for old bugs and a (hopefully minimal) amount of new bugs.

Although we are not yet deploying the new version on the server, mostly because some guy who wants to make a commercial release of a Spring mod is just in the middle of finishing his release, and he needs the new version to be tested and approved. If no major bugs are found and nothing unexpected happens, this version will be deployed on the main server around Friday next week.

However, you can already single-player test the new version. If you are a mod maker or similar, you can use it to adjust and fine tune your stuff, although you should have done this already before.

Portable, self-contained archive:

Installer (Does alter your old settings, you need to copy the new font to your old install to make it work again):

Whats new:

Rewritten AI interface in C
Despite the fact that the old one was a mess left over from the earlymost days of spring, the new interface allows a greater flexibility of AI-development. The old group-AIs where removed altogether, because they had already been replaced by lua-scripts.

Soundworks
Audio effects are another area which lacked love for a long time. Instead of having different sound renderers for unix and windows, there is now a single cross-platform library, so it sounds the same on all platforms spring runs on. Other gimmicks are newly added effects doppler effects, pitch adjustment for gamespeed etc. But the most advantage provides the new "sounds.lua"-file, which gives you fine-grained control over various aspects of sound effects while beeing fully backwards-compatible.

Improved UI-appearance
You will immediately notice that something changed in the interface. The old fonts where replaced by something new and shiny, while the renderer got an overhaul to produce better readable text. This also fixed various bugs, improved the handling of 16:9 displays and provides better window resizing support.

Other noteworthy changes
  • numerous rendering fixes for broken cards and drivers (mostly ATI)
  • raise some engine limitations (now 250 players can play in 250 team with 32000 units)
Summary: 2292 files changed, 149700 insertions, 290245 deletions

For a complete list of all the changes, check out the shortlog:

Is the dual window patch planned to be merged in the next spring release ? It would also require to add the setting in springsettings.

[15:31:40] <[IW]Gnomre> looks like i only need to update one widget for the new engine ver
[15:34:31] <[IW]Gnomre> [ 0] Error in ViewResize(): [string "LuaUI/Widgets/iw_square_buildpics.lua"]:45: attempt to call field 'remove' (a nil value)
[15:34:41] <[IW]Gnomre> os.remove("modpanel.txt")
[15:34:56] <[IW]Gnomre> presumably a security related change?
[15:35:05] <[IW]Gnomre> i suppose it doesn't matter all that much if it isn't removed
[15:37:06] <BrainDamage> you need to use VFS functions
[15:37:12] <BrainDamage> iirc
[15:37:41] <[IW]Gnomre> well i just copied a trick from one of trepan's very old widgets which used to be included in spring
[15:38:14] <[IW]Gnomre> where it creates a temporary text file, writes some ctrlpanel.txt info to it, then loads it as the ctrlpanel info and deletes it
[15:38:34] <[IW]Gnomre> hell, maybe there's a prettier way to do that now. up until now it's worked so i haven't given a shit :P
[15:39:21] <lurker> what fvs function, though?
[15:39:58] <lurker> it has nothing to make or delete files
[15:40:51] <BrainDamage> oh, sorry, i got confused then
[15:41:02] <lurker> no, that's what I was thinking too
[15:41:06] <lurker> but there isn't one :x
[15:46:27] <lurker> gnomre, you should post in the rel thread
[15:46:35] <lurker> removing that might have been in error

paste shit yourself lurker, you stay logged in all the time :(

the proper way would be have a function that loads a ctrlpanel string into the engine without ugly workarounds like writing to a file and reading it.

Hi there, i uninstalled 0.78.2 and removed all old folders and files from the Spring directory. Then i installed 0.79, added maps, mods (and the ota base pack) then ran the lobby program as usual. I could select a mod and map, added an AI, clicked Start and...

Nothing. The program does not launch.

Then i deleted everything again and tried to reinstall 0.78.2, it doesn't start neither and reports an error:

Is there a place where i can download that font, google found nuffin

You probably can't run Skirmish through the client either. You might be able to run through spring.exe directly?

Yes, spring.exe works (in 0.79) but not when i use the lobbies.

I can wait for a proper release that's not the problem, but how can i repair 0.78.2 again so that i can play my Comp-Stomps again, atm nothing works because of the missing font...

As if having him in the community isn't enough of an inconvenience.

Did you try the reset button in the settings program? If that fails, go delete the config file in your home folder\local settings\application data\springsettings.cfg

Did both and i still get the "missing font" error.

Edit:
Woot! Success! I found the font in the 0.79 portable package and threw it into my 0.78.2 folder and it works again! :P

Thanks for your help guys!

Hi,

first testing -> running nice.
(have installed over the previous version..)

Save/Load is (maybe) finaly here ;)

But have this testet only with an AI as second player and the loading
fail with the AI loading.
Maybe the same problem as with replays with AI.
(have never got this running)

Hope this will be fixed.

hi, just tested it out.

a few little things i've noticed.

when coms explode i get a large red and green quad over the map where the explosion scar should be.

the text during loading is way too big and goes off the screen.
perhaps a checklist or log would be better?

otherwise seems pretty decent.

is there a test lobby server to use for the new version?
