New 8v8 and FFA map - Rage V1

Post by Beherith »

Trying to break a bit from the FFA concept ive been using on Blindside-Claymore-TMA-0-Kolmogorov.

This map should result in more use of varied attack styles, hopefully giving every BA unit a fair chance at being useful.

Yes, there is a typemap, but only 20% road speed bonus due to the small map size.

Looks cool, although the terrain looks unnatural compared to some of your other ffa maps. I wish these new maps got more playtime :(

By the way is this a default carrara3d material or a customized one? I like the look of it. How do you get so much detail into the grass?

Thanks, its far from default. 100% custom stuff in it. The grass detail comes from SSMF splatting, not from the texture itself.

I like the concept, but I dislike the fact that on such small map neigbours will allways fight to death at start (with com push). That means games will end fast , and ones born without neigbours get HUGE advantage.

It seems not nearly as balanced as dworld or mearth, but i played only twice and time will tell.

Maybe make it biggers so neigbours can coexist (meaning odd guardian on hills cant kill my main base).

With 8 players it migt be fine, still giving advantage to corners.

IMO FFA maps should be somehow rounded or give middleplayes some advantage. U did it perfectly in dwolrd, where middle gets decent expo. Still hardest to win from middle, just like in throne middle ring(imposible to win, space too tight)

Bigger maps means more time to react and less chance to die in 5 min.

Gah..why do u hate guardians so much?
Just scout a bit more if u fear guardians.
Not all maps can be rounded and maps with sea in them are way lamer imo cause the sea eco is not as fun as land eco.

I think this map is ok as long as middle starts get a bit more metal.
I'm not sure why you added the typemap, the map isnt that big..
Also maybe it would be better to just add the typemap for the entire map as oppose to only roads since it makes pathing a bit weird and i see no gameplay reason to not just add the typemap everywhere.

I think it plays fine and even in its current state its a v cool map.

True.

I think a ffa maps biggest feature should be to be playability with any number of players. It is lame if a player gets twice the resources because the spot next to him is empty. So on a good ffa map you have no clear neighbour and many pathes or just an open map so that everybody gets a chance at the free space.

Eitherwise can not comment on map (not played yet) other that the close up screenshots of the shore look really nice.

Was trying to play this map today, but it wasn't being played on the FFA host when I was there. I also haven't gotten to play Ravaged yet. Whenever I start a vote to play new maps, people vote against it.
I suggest a boycott, all mappers should stop releasing maps. See what happens.

Most mappers have stopped, there is little point in making anything new.

This ^^

To be perfectly honest, I like smoth's maps better than my own. Prolly to do with the attention to minor details that don't matter but just make the quality that much better, that and he has a much better grasp of making drastic height ranges work than I do.

I like mapping, I'll never stop liking it, but I basically have way too much to do in other arenas.

@forb, smoth: One of my long term plans is to update the top 50 maps to include some appropriate features and SSMF.

@cheesecan: Ravaged is made for 1v1, optionally 2v2, so join a 1v1 host and wait a bit. Rage has been played a few times, I dont find the closeness and 1v1-prefilter to be a bad thing, but what I really would like is:

Ability to assign start points based on player counts, that way it can be optimized for more than just 2-4-8-12-16-way. This is especially crucial on non symmetric maps.

@knorke: An example of a large free space FFA map would be Melange_v1

@Gota: Entrances are easy to porc up with HLT, so a guardian is not out of the question - especially when facing a less experienced enemy who should rather tech for the later game advantage.

@ginekolog: As Ive offered to you more than once because I appreciate your experience, is to draft me a FFA heightmap (really only draft is needed, cause world machine is so good at interpreting them) This map gives a bonus mex to center players and an extra expo and better access to sea mexes. I still hate to play Dworld, since start points 4 and 11 are OP.

I was actually addressing Gine and his attitude towards guardians.

Nothing. BA/DSD 24/7 on all autohosts as usual. No BA players would even notice anything changed

actual starting points on the top 50 maps would be a tremendous improvement, nevermind multiple starting point sets depending on play and ally arrangements.

Too many times have I setup an AI test and found the enemy AI is in the set of metal spots next door, or even occupying the same position as my own starting unit trapped.
