Yeah It seems like the map creation forum has been kind of dead. Does the download link not work?

so screenshots and more information please, why is it 80mb?

I realized while doing this i have no idea how to show off a map...

I just let XTA run for a bit and took some screenshots, hope it gives someone an idea of what it looks like.

I don't know why it's 80 megs, probably the texture, which i did not do, that was m00nthel00n.. At least i think that's his username on these boards. I will probably put it up on springfiles once i deem it fun and completely playable. Right now the coasts are bit too steep in places. So feel free to download it and tell me what you think.

reminds me a little bit of settlers 2 for same reason. metal layout would be good to see.
the heightmap seems more detailed than the other world maps on springfiles:

http://springfiles.com/show_file.php?id=1671 & http://springfiles.com/show_file.php?id=1666

for a 80mb map i will be hard to get any play. (the other world map is 60mb as well)

Maybe only use parts of the map? (like europe or north america)

So, i loaded up the map, and i like that you used WICed to texture it, it looks very good. But also, you seem to have used SpringMapEdit to compile it. SpringMapEdit has a tiny issue, namely it doesnt compress textures with tiling like mapconv does.

You should try to use the last hacked mapconv for compiling the map. But first make the sea floor a solid flat color, so mapconv can compress it better. Filesize after that should be under 30 megs.

@Beherith: SME only re-uses 100% identical tiles.

Frost, in this case, thats perfectly enough! :D

Snoop, just tell your friend to color the seabed with a flat color to reduce filesize greatly, at 0 cost to the looks.

Is this for your Conflict Terra mod? In that case, shouldn't you go with more of a flat-shading and boxy look? CT units have a very peculiar style, and putting them on a semi-realistic map makes them just look crude. A more heavily stylized map using geometric patterns or something would be far more appropriate for them.

This map was made before CT was started. We have been experimenting with using flat color textures. Generally, I've found people are more or less repulsed by them....still working on that.

i like this style, although Id rather we had bigger versions which focus on a cross section, preferably at a diagonal rather than a neat square so it better fits.

Most world maps are nice but you cant defend a country because its normally only big enough to fit a handful of peewees in. How am I to build my base in scotland if I cant fit a kbot lab in there?

Hey i forgot about this thread.... Well the coasts are too steep, and people complain about the file size. But hey, if someone wants to fix the coasts and upload it be my guest. It was very fun map aside from coast lines.

i would also like a world map to be rather big, and it would be nice if South-America (17,840,000 km2) was not smaller then Greenland (2,166,086 km2). These are all only realism related wishes, but with the world map, they kind of make sense.

It's a flaw in the Mercator projection he's using. Sadly, when you unwrap a sphere onto a cylinder you get this mess. Every projection is going to get problems though - the Gall-Peters squishes vertically everything in the far north and south, the Robinson projection or the Sinusoidal one skew things on the East and West sides of the map.

Still, the Robinson doesn't skew too much.
