Mousewheel is broken - cant play spring

Post by SirArtturi »

Hi'ya

Panda is sad. He can't play spring anymore.

His mouse suddenly got broken. The wheel aint working anymore. It was a fancy wheel.

Anybody else have a same mouse or same problem? Any ideas how to fix it? I think the warranty still might cover it, but panda has no idea where the receipt is...

Usually the mouse wheel has a small tube extending out of it in a hex-shape which fits into a small chamber, and when you rotate the wheel the chamber also rotates which gives the rotation signal.

After years of heavy use the hex-shape becomes round and doesn't fit the chamber anymore, making the scroll not work anymore. What you could do is open your mouse, take out the mouse wheel and use a bit of superglue to glue it to the chamber. Make sure to use the glue on the correct side so you don't make it impossible to rotate the mouse wheel and also after applying the glue keep rotating it every now and then for at least 20-30 minutes to make sure you didn't make a mistake.

However, check how the wheel works first, you need to be sure the used mechanism can be fixed with a bit of glue. Some mouses are more complicated and on those it doesn't work.

once you are certain that 1) warranty is over 2) it is not a software thing:
unscrew ALL the screws! and look inside.
From what I have seen there seem to be 2 common ways for the mousewheel turn sensor thingy:
1) Remember the old mouses with the ball that drove little wheels with holes? The holes were read by a photo sensor. Same mouses use the same thing for the scrollwheel. The sensor can become obscured by dirt so carefully clean it.
2) The scrollwheel rotates some funny shaped axle with cams that press on a switch. The axle can become too round or the switch can come lose or w/e. Most simple is to try to get the switch closer to the axle but that depends how it is build etc.

In the meantime page up&down keys can be used to zoom in Spring ;)

Ouch!

Panda haven't opened a mouse since times of ball mouse. Optical mouses are actually pretty expensive enough to get 'screwed'.

But I guess I'll do it anyway before buying a new one.

Thx.

Btw, how it could be a software thing? You mean I should try different drivers?

You can get a (basic) optical mouse from the valintatalo for like 15 €. Bought one to my netbook and now I ended up using it to my desktop too, because the old one is so big and heavy.

im pretty sure the basic microsoft optical mouse (£2 off the internet) is still superior to 99% the competition in terms of comfort.

G300 here :P They had a 40% of all Logitech products deal a few weeks ago. I got about £20 off it, pretty pleased with it. Upgraded from a MX518 too which served me well.

Btw Artturi, have you got the latest Logitech mouse software? You should be able to reprogram the forward/backward buttons on your mouse to scroll up and scroll down.

Ok updated latest setpoint software.

Works now occasionally, but still rarely. It feels it misses most of the scrolls.

The wheel can't be broken..

For already years, manufacturers have used optical sensors for reading the scrolling wheel input. Also, this mouse HAS an optical sensor there AFAIK.

I say take it apart and clean all your finger grease out of it, it might work :-)

I have the wheelsystem on my hand but the last screw is so small and screwed so tight that I think I'm screwed with my current screwdriver :(

Anyway, It seems like mechanism (the 'hammer' or whatever it is) is moving very little. Could that be the problem?

Where did you get it from? Fortunately I got my logitech trackball from newegg and they store all my receipts so I didn't have to find anything special to get a replacement.

Perhaps you can send a mail or call the vendor and ask if they have a record of your purchase? Credit card company might have one too if you used one.

I pulled mine apart too trying to fix it but it was too much of a hassle compared to just asking for a new one.
