I don't usually get involved in matters of politics since, frankly, they are a crock of shit.
However this is a special case, and if you're a Canadian you need to speak up.
Recently a government-appointed board of slackjawed morons with no relevant technical expertise, known as the CRTC, decided that competition is bad for their corporate interests. So, everyone's favorite phone company, Bell, will soon be no longer required to....
....
....Well my understanding gets a bit vague at this point. A lot of it is probably just fear-mongering by independent ISPs, but the fact is, I don't trust Bell with anything. They've kept Canada's telecommunication industry in the stone age, and this latest CRTC decision will put us back into the... what now, caveman age? Regardless it sucks ass.

Re: Canadian internet is going to hell
Disconnected.Kimberly: Hello, thank you for visiting bell.ca. How may I help you today?
You: Hi, I would like to know when fiber service will be available, roughly
Kimberly: I will be happy to assist you.
Kimberly: Would you be interested in Bell's Home phone service?
You: how is that relevant?
Kimberly: Let me explain to you.
Kimberly: You will be happy to know that we offer the Internet service even if you do not have a phone line. If you want to place an order or for further information's, please contact our High Speed Centre @ 1 888 590-2375.
You: I'm asking about broadband internet over fiber optic, not phone service
Kimberly: Yes, I've explained the same terminology to you.
You: Are you a real person? You don't seem to be paying any attention to what I'm asking
Kimberly: Being on bell.ca, you could subscribe to the Bell's Internet service, either if you have Bell Home phone or subscribe to Bell Home phone.
You: I have a phone line
Kimberly: This is the reason, I've asked you, whether you would be interested in Bell's Home phone service.
Kimberly: Thank you, is that the Bell Home phone?
You: I'm using it right now. I don't want another phone line, I like the one I have. I would like fiber-optic internet service, or rather, I would like to know a timeframe when it might be available in my area. Do you have access to this type of information?
Kimberly: May I have the Street name, Street number, Apt/suite, City, Province and Postal code to check the availability of Internet at your place?
You: [MY HOME ADDRESS HA HA HA]
Kimberly: Thank you.
Kimberly: Please give me a 2 minutes of your time while I lookup the Internet availability for you.
You: I am aware it is not presently available. I'm asking about a timeframe in the future
You: a year? five years? that kind of thing
I hate bell.

become the next american state already.
Re: Canadian internet is going to hell
i responded.
IIRC, bell was given billions of dollars to create a proper internet backbone that would not require routing via the USA by 2005. they failed.
also i believe that they said you're be able to get the same quality of service regardless of where you live; they failed in that respect too.
