SefiLobby Preview

Post by Sefidel »

Hey Everyone, I felt like giving you all an oppurtunity to troll, so here it goes.

Intro Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0symJOgo7o

I have been working my lobby project for a good while now and project that it will be complete by end of may. I have included the splash video beta, and an interface beta video. The inteface beta is debugging, and runs at much much slower than the finished project.

Some of the functionalities i demonstate.
1.Animated Buttons
2.Custom Servers/Users/Channels
3.Translation
4.Example login.

Some of my goals for this lobby have been better language integration, image in channel viewing, and just an overall cleaner game feeling lobby. Anyways feel free to give me feedback on needs and wants.

And they said he would fail.

Well, the intro looks pretty darn gay, but other than that, it looks pretty good, can i have my forward copy now?

I completed /channels in 2 seconds on TAS Client.

[edit] Also, plan ahead. Right now we might have a few hundred inactive channels, but what happens down the road if/when spring's activity increases, and those inactive channels become active channels? Your client shouldn't be loading information it doesn't require to work.

In TASClient the problem with /list is not that it is slow, but that the output is unreadable: too long topics, and not sorting channels by number of people, makes the channels names drown in mass of spammy text.

In between tasclient crashing too much and springlobby being an ugly buggy slow heap of garbage, I actually like the looks on this one and wanna give it a shot. Got a dogfood build out?

Does a lobby client really need an intro? Just use a short splashscreen and don't paste the name all over the program.
Do people really want animated buttons?
The black UI/window frame and title in scroll/italic text makes it look like a keygen, it just needs some midi music and you're set.

All you need to do is make the layout similar to IRC (like TASclient), everyone is used to it and it's pretty logical. Don't bog down with un-needed stuff like animated buttons because who cares about animated buttons? Things like that are "oooh animated, nice!" for about 5 minutes.
tbh, your layout is pretty good, and the multiple logins is a good idea (helps the smurfs), but make some screenshots instead of a video.

Well, if it does not run on Linux it fails.

But i like the the clickibunti interface...as long as its fast in the final version.

I like the general idea. The intro's a waste of time unless it's triggerable (i.e., config for a game == splash for that game) and can be turned off by users. Same thing with the animated buttons- if you can only have one experience, and there isn't any variety, it'll be pretty boring.

Lord knows, I wouldn't mind seeing a silly thing or a pac-man clone or whatever while a client rebuilds minimap listings, etc. on startup. But that's just me.

Anyhow, I'm glad to see that you're getting somewhere, but it still looks really rough. But obviously just getting the basics working is the big deal.

Oh, and on the unused channels thing... having looked at that, it really looks like there needs to be better back-end management tools for pruning and weeding that stuff. Lemme guess- right now, server users have to type in a command... per channel... yeah.

In response to comments, yeah its not really the time it takes to get the information, its just annoying.when i built it takes very little time but its still a long list of channels, and as was mentioned it can be difficult to parse.

as far as "Gay buttons" and intros, people like visualizations, personally i thinkits a little trashy, obviously beta version stuff, but the graphics are like 50% of the situation. This lobby will feel alot more like a video game lobby ,which should help people stick around.

also id like to add colored fonts, which would work by adding a <red> tag before your text. this would be limited but could be integrated into the lobby easily, the problem is it would reflect badly for other lobbies, so think about integrating it elsewhere plz
