Then try NASA.
All images are free from any copyright - you can use them for whetever you desire.
for examle [1] is just great for creating new maps.

there are also some hi-res images like this mars-one: [2] (downloadable as 23444 x 23377 pixel in tif or jpg-format (548.1mb resp. 47.26mb))

or this map ( [3] ) from earth woul make (mirrored at bottom of course) a great challange. the colors are actually heighmaps (just make the sea black and convert it to grayscale .. thats it).

what are u waiting for? i can't do all alone ;)

these arent heightmaps. they are photos taken. probably with some kind of terrahertz camera

not that its not useful. i just didnt want novice map makers to get their hopes up

of course i havnt checked out every image on that site. so you might have some luck, but theyd make good textures

you can however download heightmaps as .DEM's i think they are

this website gives details on how to find them, how to open them in photoshop and convert them into .bmp's.
it also explains how to make a fairly decent texture from them

oh and by the way dezil to use the (url) tags
(**im using "()" brakets so it doesnt count as BBCode)

(url=your link goes here) what you want to call your link here(/url)

maybe u just should have clicked one of the links .. however i quote the most important:
NASA wrote:PIA03379: Shaded Relief with Height as Color,[...]
it is just a picture as the one in your link after step2 (before adding the relief shader)..

Those are not heightmaps, sorry to burst the bubble.

Dead Rabbit, read the heightmap making section of my tutorial at the top of this forum, it's a very easy way to come out with some really kick ass designs. Also, if you but the pro version of l3dt(only 25 bucks, comeon, you can do it) there are about a gazillion more steps added to the filters which enable you to produce just about anything.
