I'm not big on turned based stratagy games. I've read a lot of
good reviews about Galactic Civilizations II gold on-line. So, I
got a copy.
I'm been playing it when I have any free time. The game IMO
is GREAT ... It's a MUST have game .. It's only single player
against AI ... players. I hear they are working on a multi player
add-on for the game. If that happens they should have one
of the best games on the market ...
Just my opinion ... Go get a copy ....

I don't know about GalCiv II, but I have tried the GalCiv I demo. For fifteen minutes. Then clean uninstalled. Set a record. The only positive aspect of this game (IMO) was the fact that you had to research the universal translator before you could understand other races, but even the entire frikkin concept of a universal translator in a time of gauss guns and missiles is borked anyway, so I guess there weren't any real positive sides to the game for me.
Now if you wanna try a 4X space game which does portray the starting age of interstellar travel properly, try Sword of the Stars. Taht Rawks.

GalCiv 1 is pretty fun, GalCiv 2 as well except for the combat system and some bugs with older graphic cards.
Go get Starships Unlimited 2. That game is a winner!

galciv 2 is better than master of orion 2. that means it's the best space 4X game ever made, and it gets better with every patch.
howgh.

I prefer the Space Empires series to be honest. The AI isn't as good but there's multiplayer and it's more fun to me as a person who is pretty awful at this kind of things as there's way more stuff to do.

There are enhancements to the space empire AI available. Space empires 4 > space empires 5. Space empires 4 is the king of all space turn based strategy.

SE4 is totally boring. SE5 and the couple of offsprings aren't really exciting, either. None of them have either the atmosphere or fun factor which made up MoO2. Though, I played SE1 or 2 before anything else and quite liked them (and still do), even if it was just the demo.

Except for a battle system which doesn't exist in GalCiv2.
All I want is MoO2 turn based battles (or proper RTS battles) and the same easy way to setup your ships, that's what's kept me playing. SE4 comes close but it just doesn't feel right. :P

look for SWORD OF THE STARS
Thats turn based building etc and RTS combat. War for fnu. Plus the tech tree is randomised each time you play...

I found gal civ in general disappointing... At least after all this hype. The ship customization effectively ammounts to something that is visually relevent only. All they did is put nodes on the models that allow other models to attach. The tech tree was uncreative compared to MOO or expecially alpha centauri. The other civilizations really didn't have the character development that MOO did.
Ultimately it has all the ingredients of a great game, it just lacks the polish and put together IMO. They COULD have made the tech tree more dynamic. They COULD have developed the characters more. They COULD have made more design relevence. They COULD have produced a more dynamic combat system. However, the game is what it is, a brilliant framework that COULD be increadible, but just isn't in it's current form.
Maby the modders have come up with something though... I hear the game is quite moddable...
