cant get jpeg to compile?

i seem to be having alot of problems with mapconv just recently.

anyway. i cant compile as a .bmp because its 300mb too large.

so i was told you can compile with a .jpg changed it to
-t texture.jpg
in the .bat file

saved it as a baseline standard with 0 quality (as i was told progressives dont work)

but i get an error displayed within the dos program itself
"this application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unnusual way please contact the applications support team for more information"

aswell as a windows notification saying that mapconv.exe has had to close and would i like to send an error report

ummm what else
in photoshop i also have the option to save as an optimised baseline format jpg (i havnt tried this yet)

should i try baseline optimised?
should it be the .jpg or .jpeg extension?
does the quality of the jpeg matter?
where am i going wrong basically...?

thanks alot D.R

Hi,

Did you down the size of the map? What is the new size of
the map now. Is it still based on the last map you zipped up?

I downloaded the test file and did some changes to it. I down sized
it to a 40x40 map. I used a jpg file format for the main texture of
the map. It took 40 minutes to compile it ....

So, here is a screenie of it ... Also, I slapped a texture together ...

If your map looks anything like this I'm looking forward to it's release ...

Also, the map size is 65MB ...

Dead.Rabit,

You ahould be able to compile it at a size of 40x40. The only
real problem I see with maps that size is... its going to end up
around 70 MB sd7 files. You might reducing it under a size of
32x32 or small say 22x22 or 24x24 ..

wow thats awsome genblood

but you see it just doesnt seem to work for me. i also downsized the map to 40 x 40. redid the heightmap a little bit to include some smaller rivers.

did you do the texture in photoshop? if so what save settings work?
am i right to put in -t texture.jpg in the .bat file

sorry if some of these questions are a bit novice. but im still an amateur map maker im afraid...
D.R

p.s. im planning on making alot of use of tiles. so that should mae it a bit smaller. also doing things like using ultra compression of the sd7 etc.. im hoping to keep the filesize down..

currently im using 512 x 512 tiles. so ill see how well it works and maybe up it to 1024 if i have to or downsize if i can...

ill upload some pictures of my problem later. on my lunchbreak now. ill be home at about 6ish though

ok as promised here are the images of my screen as the errors happen
(you might of noticed i have 2 topics for 1 map. its because i get 2 different errors. unfortunately neither forum has given me an answer yet)

when i try to compile with my texture as a .bmp this is what i get:
Image
i used a greyscale 8 bit (bit depth) to save it less then 600MB

this is what happens when i try to use a jpeg... now ive never used a jpg for a texture before this map but i seem to be doing something wrong...
Image

i had a hunch that i might be saving it in the wrong way. my computer wont let me save as an optimised. so these are the saving dialogs i used in photoshop
Image

incase anyone was interested i uploaded the files ive been using. aswell as a screenshot of the file i use to compile my map
(i figured it'd be a waste to put it all in there)

thanks so much to everyone whos helped so far

I just downloaded the file2 zip and it crashes when trying to compile
the jpg or the bmp .. The only thing I can think of is, it's the mapconv
app. It needs to be rewrite to accept bmps over 600 GBs and maps that
are larger then 40x40 ..

My system specs are close to yours.

System:

AMD64 4200+ x2
4 GB DDR
2 WD 250GB sata
1 DVD Drive
1 DVD-+RW drive
WinXP Pro w.sp2 all patches installed

I'm going to take some time and see if I can compile the
source files for the app mapconv ...

I'll mess with it and see if I can do someting with it ...

ok ive managed to get it compile
=]

i kept downsizing by 2x2 until it compiled. which it did at 38x38

so again thanks for all the help

still though the question remains. why doesnt mapconv make use of virtual memory?
