Vista + ATI graphics card = No spring

Basically put, vista kills spring - or more accuratly it seems that ATIs buggy vista drivers do.

I was wondering if anyone else has this same issue. The screen fragments like you would normally get with a graphics card overheat (for those unlucky enough to experience) closely followed by a hardware crash.

I know two others on spring running vista but with n-vidia cards with no problems at all, so as far as I know, this is an ATI error. Can anyone else confirm this for me or am I on my own for finding a solution?

I tried a bunch of different stuff, so I'm pretty convinced we just have to wait a week or two for the 7.2 or 7.3 Catalysts to fix it. I am wondering if we can submit trouble tickets / bugs to ATI. Anyone have any ideas?

Yes, that confirms it's an ATI problem. I myself have an X850.

I'm going to try a few different things, running with different graphics settings and windowed.

I considered submitting a suppot ticket, but then I doubt that ATI is perticularly interested in fixing vista for a independant, freeware opensource game - especially after all the trouble they reported with getting it to work with anything in the first place.

I don't have any other problems with any other of my games. You?

Edit: Window mode dosn't work, nor does running in minimal settings. Guess we're stuck waiting for a catylist, unless theres anything the spring team can do.

This is the only OpenGL title I've tried. Source engine stuff works fine. Those are the only two things I've tried so far. Anyway, this is the first OpenGL release from ATI for Vista, I assume its going to get better. They actually redid it from the ground up like they've been promising for like 2 years.

Good news, there's an AMD/ATI driver timeline available now! http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=367 The 7.2 Catalyst drivers that should be available in the next week or so include "significant OpenGL optimizations". I hope this makes Spring work, if not they have more changes in store for the 7.3 drivers. If this patch doesn't work, I'm going to spend a hell of a lot of time finding out how to get in touch with ATI's developer relations folks and hook them up with a copy of Spring to see if they can help us.

The 7.2 drivers have been released

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/vist ... sta32.html

I'll try them with Spring and see if they work...

Edit: It seems to work in windowed mode, caused me a problem in full screen but I think that was my setup (I'm still at work so difficult to test)

Vista FTL.
ATI FTL.
Linux + NVidia FTW!

P.S. Reading this message will actually make you more stupid.

I installed these last week and they don't work for me. Oddly, I have a report of a mobile Radeon X600 working with the 7.1s. For those who are working/not working please list what card you have here, I want to see if this is an X800 specific bug since I've got an X800XL and khuskan has an X850 and it crashes for him too.

I have an X800 Pro (made by Sapphire) and have the 7.2 Catalyst drivers installed. When I try to launch the game (full screen) I get a black screen for a few seconds, then the handy Vista notification that the client has crashed. In the System Tray I get a notification that "Display Driver R300 stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

In non-full-screen mode it seems to work just fine. I have my desktop set to 1280x1024 and was playing in a 1024x768 window and it didn't have any problem (except the bot commander appearing out of nowhere in the very top left corner... but that's not graphics :) )

It still crashes on my PC in windowed mode, but this is another report I've heard of Spring working with ATI. It seems totally random, it doesn't seem linked to one particular system configuration or Spring setting. I think I'm just going to submit the bug to ATI and see if they can figure it out.

vista is useless for Open GL and jut about half the games on the market, stick to XP or Linux.
