You don't need TA to play it, just download Spring from the Download page.

TA CD = NOT needed.

Original TA NOT needed in ANYWAY, except to legally play TA mods, but no one cares really.

Sorry, my Mistake. Nobody needs the Total Annihilation CD to play Spring. Spring does not need the TA CD. All it is needed for are legal Reasons,
so if you want to play Balanced Annihilation, or Absolut Annihilation, you should have it - otherwise you are a Pirate :D.

There is however a spring Downloadversion, that is completely free of any Kind of legal Problems, because it never had contact or sax with Total Annihilation and or its Programm Code.

Now the same Problem you had (asking yourself - do i really need the CD) may scare off many other possible Spring Downloaders, because it is really easy to missunderstood. Therefor i asked into the open Air of this Thread - for Clarification - beneath the Dl- Links to the two Spring Versions.

Just for Rembering:
Spring Version 1
Still Contains Files that TA-Based Mods need. You don`t need the CD- for technical Reasons, but you need them for legal Stuff..

Spring Version2
Contains only Spring, never had Contact with Total Annihilation. There are Mods you could Play with the Spring Engine, which never used anyhting out of TA-> Examples are Expand&Exterminate, Gundam, Nanoblobs..

I download the spring downloader and i install it, i also tried to play a game, but i found out that the unit are brand-new and that the game is not user-friendly enough ( for the new users ) so i would like someone to tell me the basic controls and some tips.

Whats the Spring version with the TA units?

Yer it's fun to be mean.

There's a GPL one and a non-GPL one. The GPL version (GPL content installer) comes with the mod Nanoblobs, it's not a very userfriendly mod for beginners. No reason not to play it though. Can be gotten through unknown-files as mod too (link below).
The other one (Regular installer) comes with some XTA version (8.1?). It's the TA units you've been talking about. You only have to install either one but since you are interested in TA I suggest the regular one because it comes with all necessary OTA stuff which the GPL one doesn't.
This (BA) is another TA based mod which has become quite popular.

You can get other mods from there: http://spring.unknown-files.net/category/14/Mods/
Or just have a look at the mod forum, first post of a mod's thread usually has the latest link if it's been released.

For the manual, check out the wiki. Most stuff should be explained there.

The boxes are for when starting positions are "Choose In Game". Each team can choose starting positions only within the box of their team number. If there is no box with their team number, they can choose anywhere on the map.
