Drop in FPS and performance over time

Hey
Heres my setup
Intel Core2Duo 2.1ghz
1.00gb Ram
Geforce 7950GT (latest drivers)
The problem is that over the past week (on high graphics) spring has gone from 80+ FPS down to 15- .
First of all. Why would this happen?
I lowered all graphics to lowest and the FPS was exactly the same (15-) if not worse.
I have the latest drivers.
I cleared all but 1 map and mod... no change
Can somebody please help me? it has become unplayable now.

I've got a crappier setup but I don't experience drops in performance that much (hardly even, unless I've filled my base with Sentinels and units and nt air buildings). Is it possible that you've got an external application that eats up a lot of memory? For example, virus scans?

Search the forum for problems with dual cores & nvidia settings

In nvidia control panel, turn off thread optimization if its there, its been known to make framerates plummet on dual core systems.

Sorry, none of these worked.
Okay, after some time on most maps the framerate suddenly skyrockets back to 70+
however, it NEVER does, on Altored Divide or Speed Metal.
So now Im thinking, are these SM3 maps? and do SM3 Maps have some wierd impact on my card? because the cpu usage half way thru a game with 6+ players is still below 15%

Oh Ghastly Terrors, you might have to play GOOD maps!

Yep, and pretty soon all good maps with be SM3 maps, and it seems SM3 maps could be a problem for me, but im just assuming its the multiple texture thingy

No SM3 maps have been played yet. All the sm3 maps available arent in circulation, you wont find an SM3 map with !maplink.
All the maps at UF are SMF maps not SM3.

Sounds like a CPU problem since changing graphics settings doesn't matter. Maybe you have a virus or installed some program that's taking up all the processor time.

It might be your system running out of free RAM and trying to use virtual memory on your hardrive to compensate.(unlikely)
I'd also check your PSU, it may not have a high enough wattage for your PC, resulting in brownouts of reduced performance and possible crashes.(very likely considering your specs)

I always suffer in speed metal, but its because its high amount of metal allows players to make thousands of units each doing a diferent function and requiring various calculations to be done and... well, I guess you got it

.
You can try donwloading one of those ram administrator programs, altough I have absolutely no idea if that will help or not...

thanks guys...
but my CPU usage in-game never escalates above 15%
I'll just show u these fps stats on highest settings (dynamic water)
Small Supreme Battlefield runs at 70+ FPS
Splintered Tropics at 70+
Speed Metal at 15-
Altored Divide at 15-
yet the large Supreme Battlefield at 70+
Greenfields runs at 15- for 2 mins then jumps to 70+ rest of the game
my system CAN handle all this fine, its like it chooses not too.

And it has to be something with Spring, as my computer handles all the latest games with max settings and thousands of units.

And it has to be something with *OpenGL* Spring, as my computer handles all the latest *DirectX*games with max settings and thousands of units.
corrected. Sometimes the latest drivers != the best or most appropriate drivers.
As for the 7950GT, I've seen them on ebuyer(£300+) and I can find a cheaper 8800GS.
I'd check your VM pagefile for now, and check your drivers. Can you goto Arghs nvidia driver thread and try changing the settings to match and reporting back?

Let me see, how do i thank you??
THANK YOU SO MUCH
turned out to be thread optimization (but cudnt find it without Arghs thread)
Spring is now 100+ fps on speed metal and altored thanks to this.
thankyou for putting up with my complaining yet still trying to help AF, and thankyou Arghs for the thread =]
woot ima play spring now
