Free camera.
Modifier keys used in conjunction with the Mousewheel, provide all the needed (->free, smooth) controls.
Zoom key: This key (plus wheel), zooms in and out (can be default behaviour).
Pan key: what it says, both horizontal zoom and vertical one.
Free look key: once there was a game that had this (iirc it was GC), excellent, it was the best camara feature ever i recall in rts game.
How it works: you press it, and its like you are using free rotatable mode, you release it, and its like the mode you were before.. of course, must be some "free" mode aswell, not overhead.
Rotation keys:
Like in total war, with the pivot in the "center"
Like in overhead rotatable, with the camara's point as a pivot.
Whats different in this approach? well each key pluz mousewheel, enables rotation in one axis only, generating a smooth effect in the rotation (like when you hold control in TA overhead, but both for horizontal and vertical motions).
Rotate around selection.
Its like having all the camera tools in one camera mode, that way you can "compose" or generate your favorite camera mode out of this one.
Why? well... when you are in total war, suddenly you need to use the free part of rotatable overhead. When you are at rotatable, you want to use the pan in TA overhead.. Happens the transittions aint that good, and you usually lose the focus, or the focus moves too much..
thats why.
