RE: Commercial Games

It's all about economics, so don't blame them. Blame stupid fanboys who run to the stores to buy just after the release... they are the voters who voted: "Yes, it's okay to release buggy games, we will always buy, as long as the hype is loud enough. Keep'em coming!"
So each time you buy a game early without reading user feedback and the game does not work, tourn your anger to the true culprit - yourself! Whack yourself in the head with that useless painted box, because it's YOU who is responsible for the situation.

Need to spread that around!
I know i feel like a fool for buying MTW2 early (although its fun it really needs a patch sometime soon >.< *bashes face on 'that useless painted box')

If everyone waited for user feedback before buying a game, then nobody would buy the game because nobody has bought the game. You could wait for reviews, but they're frequently not trustworthy...
Reviewer: Your game sucks!
Publisher: Oh dear, I guess we'll have to withdraw our advertising.
Reviewer: Your game rocks!

This is why I buy Edge magazine

Yet i am devided about buying SupCom at release independently of everything else...
And reading reviews is shit. They are mostly a matter of having been paied or not to make a favourable review. Same magazine in Portugal talked really badly of one of the Lara Croft games in february, and elected it game of the year for it's gender in September.
The only trueness is the demos. You got to try the demos.

Edge is fairly good in that respect, they dont't give review scores for free meals...

I'd rather try the full game in the language you'll be buying before buying anything. Especially when the releases (US/EUR/RUS/etc.) differ more than just language. It's quite common among russian games that the localized versions of them are broken for example.

If it wouldn't be ok to release buggy games, none of Troika's games would've been released. Hell, even Baldur's Gate II shouldn't have been released then. I say it's more than ok to release buggy games.

I've yet to try a game that doesn't work on my computer, so I don't really see how this is an issue, at all.

And here's a problem gaming actually has: abbreviations. They're always annoying, especially when they also seem to be incorrect like yours.

.. Medieval, Total War 2. Dip and eat.
As for buggy games, I'll make you all a promise. When I finally break in as a programmer, if the company I end up at releases a game that is so buggy it's actually unplayable, feel free to hunt me down and make me play it

How does the fourth or so Total War game get the title "Total War 2"?
Hint: It doesn't. The correct name is Medieval 2: Total War.

Never seen that happen, even once.

I've seen that happen more than once.

This is why I write reviews, not read them.

I've no idea what kind of games you two are playing. Or what your definition of "playable" is.

I've actually come to expect that from games made in Germany. They're always a lot buggier than other games.

The original Sin had a serious game-stopping bug in its initial release. It was on something like the first level, too.
Battlecruiser 3000AD was nigh-on worthless upon release.
Battlefield 2 is a buggy piece of shit, it wasn't far off unplayable in its first release.
Star Trek: Birth of the Federation was buggy to the point where I couldn't complete a game without it slowing down to less than 1 frame per second.
That's just off the top of my head.

Meh, bugs like minor graphical errors, playing bugs that doesnt affect much and minor annoyances in different areas... those kinda bugs are okay, even if they remove from the feeling. For example in HL2, where you fight that strider that storms out from behind you... it will only fire at you, so if you hide behind a box your allies will kill it without it firing a shot. But that's just a minor annoyance. They can release a game with those kinda bugs, if they want...
Now bugs like game balance (and i mean truly fucked up game balance), major impact on game play (controll problems, easy cheating, bugged weapons, suddenly removed equipment, incredibly stupid AI that's important to the game), huge graphical problems (invisible enemies, important plot elements getting a bugged look/invisible) and ofcourse crashes(that can't be solved and is not an patch/driver error by the user) are NOT acceptable in a gold version of a game.
That's what i think.

Did anyone ever play that WW1 RTS game called 'The Entente'
It had text that was unreadably small in the english version. And the patch that fixed it made the text a readable size, but also changed it to german.

Now think of how many games that are working, and you'll see that releasing "unplayable" games is pretty rare and not really a problem.
Also consider that many buggy games are released due to publishers, if they wouldn't be released in a buggy state, they wouldn't be released at all. And I really want more games

Are you speaking negatively of the people who made an awesome Nectaris port?

One of the world war two games... uh, Call of Duty 1 I think, the mac version had a bluescreen crash during the cutscene at the end of the 4th mission. They didn't patch it for months, you had to enter debug mode and magically move yourself to the end of the level, "past" the cutscene in order to keep playing the game.

You said never, not even once. I listed the games I knew of off the top of my head. It's not a difinitive list and only includes unplayable games. There are still plenty more games which have serious enough problems that I went for a refund, despite being technically playable.
and not really a problem.
Not really a problem?! I refuse to buy any EA games because of Battlefield 2's bugs! That and EA are a bunch of cock suckers.

I don't care who's at fault, Birth of The Federation was still an abortion!
