Need a good antivirus, Nortons just expired and apparently windows firewall is OK for that. So a good free antivirus program? please? I've heard of a few being discussed here (Avast???)

I use AVG Free (http://www.grisoft.com). It's supposed to be pretty good.

The windows firewall just blocks ports and blocks programs that arent on a whitelist.

I strongly urge you to go get zone alarm free edition as a replacement and have both firewalls running at once. Zone alarm pwns windows firewall in security.

Avast has proved itself reliable and stable (and is also free).

And get rid of the windows firewall. It sucks.

Kaspersky ftw.

Russian antivirus! Because vodka (vodak?) kills germs.

kaspersky ftl

My encounter with it was a nightmare, and that was before I encountered a virus.

That and I've heard a lot of bad stuff about it, its only merit was scannign alternate NTFS streams which is now done by most antivirus programs.

That and dont try BlackIce either, some very well respected names in the security business made a mockery out of it showing how windows firewall was more secure than BlackIce, and how in the past BlackIce has left people more exposed than someone without a firewall even (did I mention in 2004/2005 a worm broke out that had infected every single computer running BlackIce within minutes?). *rant detected*

AVG antivirus free edition + zonealarm is just as good as a full norton security suite fi not better due to its more obscure nature.

Kaspersky symantec and m'caffee are all victims of 'popularity leads to targetting leadign to insecurity'.

Dont bother looking at anything from Trend either, PcCillin and its predecessors arent worth looking at.

Bad Antivirus lulls people into a false sense of security, if only they knew.

And I laugh at all the fools who think having multiple antivirus is a good idea.

Antivirussecurity = 1stantivirus - 2ndantivirus^n - 3rd antivirus^n .... - nth antivirus^n

Avast (AntiVirus)
ZoneAlarm (Firewall)
AdAware (adbot cleaner)
SpyBot Search&Destroy (Spybot cleaner)

Get those, and beat off haxors with a giant stick.

Anti virus will do more harm to your system than good unless you are a totally clueless about using the internet.

I've run my computer for 2 years on a DMZ with no more protection than an up-to-date copy of windows (even windows firewall is off).

Just have some sense about what you do on your computer. Dont open .exe files from http://www.SERIALS-XXX-FULL-GAMES-WAREZ.com and enjoy the extra performance your computer is getting.

I see more computers than i'd ever wish to, completely crippled by whats supposedly protecting them, stuff that was top of the line a year or two ago, that now takes 5 minutes to boot up because of all the Software firewalls and antivirus.

No amount of bloated performance draining protection will compare to just keeping your computer updated along with a little common sense

Exact same thing I do, I still use my firewall, too lazy to turn it off

And don't use IE6 as your major web browser. It used to pick up more worms and viruses than east-european prostitutes... :P

Instead of installing antivirus, just use your computer with more conscience, and teach those who also use the same computer to use it carefully too.

It's very possible to use a computer w/o running into malware, even on Windows.

Use firefox or Opera.

If you must use Internet explorer, use it sparingly, make sure its configured properly (like a fortress), and make sure its IE7+all the updates.

Make sure you have firewall, as that will go a long way to preventing worms and other malware using unpatched exploits, and be very careful what you do, and that should prevent 95% of all malware getting through.

I'd keep lavasoft ad-aware on anyway to run every other weekend.

Im thinking of switching back to AVG. Avast is only marginaly better in performance (According to reveiws) and it lags my comp every effing time it's gotta update it's virus defenitions. Atleasth AVG does it when i boot and the computer dosen't fucking screech to a halt.

The only reason for me to use IE are websites which make use of java applets of which I know they're harmless, also I've got java disabled in FF (for good reason). IE's virtual machine seems faster and less resource hungry than the jre.
Running IE with those hook proection crap often turned out bad to be honest. At worst IE wasn't functioning anymore or begun to flicker like mad.
Anyway the cautious user can just like Isaac said forget entirely about all that crap.
About using multiple virus scanners: they often don't like each other or slow each other down to a crawl. The worst experience I had was with Norton AV which decided to wreck my system because it was missing a dll which prevented windows to boot any longer... taught me a lesson.
