What do you think about TA 3D?

I`ve just found this project on sourceforge.net (ta3d). Looks nice, but Spring looks much better.
The only thing is that TA 3D uses original TA resources, some info was here tauniverse.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35212

Just downloaded it and installed it then. It has a long way to go yet but it is pretty amazing for 3 mb. It is alot closer to the original TA than spring is.
As I said before it needs alot of polishing, ALOT.
You need the original TA files to runs this, well actually only the .hpi files.
The graphics, though incredibly low poly, are actually kinda nice. It has an almost cartoonish feel to it.
I like it, although it is no spring, it will eventually offer a nice alternative for those who want to play something closer to the original TA. It will however never replace spring, as spring has too much to offer elsewhere i.e its modibility and more advanced engine.
Worth a look.
Edit heres the webpage:

Interesting, but ultimately, I remain in RTS for Spring, and Spring offers more to me as a player, theorist and eventual developer than TA3D or even TA.
I agree, worth a look.

Taken a look. After some troubles getting it to work at all it now takes ages to load a small map up (probably because it unpacks all hpis it finds) and then again, no way to choose a side nor are you given a comm. Went through all of the documents which came with that thing and none provided any info on that.

Well, to install simply extract TA3D in any New folder and copy there totala1.hpi and any map (for example totala1.hpi + totala2.hpi) or (totala1.hpi + greenvalley.ufo)

Uh I simply put it in the TA root so it had more than enough maps and the totala1.hpi as well. How do you spawn comms? There wasn't anything happening... also the shading of the terrain was fucked up badly.

rattle - Coomander are always given after map is loaded. Try to install as it should be.
In the console type (spawn n), where n - number of random own units.

Yeah I assumed that you'll be given a commander but after 10 tries in a row I gave up. Tried it on 10 different maps which have endless loading times. Okay didn't try spawn yet but there was no comm in for me. I was using my TA install which is 3.1 and got the CCX as well.
Is there some sort of manual I'm missing? I went through everything that looked like a text file...

by Babax
Yes, you`ve missed manual. It`s in the docs/ subdir.
All the info you can find on the official site and forum.

Okay I went through the site except for the forums and found no info. The manual wasn't much helpful either, wonder why I missed it.

.
I gave it another shot and copied the hpis over in a seperate install and guess what, it worked from the start. Weird.
Well what do I like about it? The projection shadows... would be cool if spring would have that so people with sucky graphic cards can have shadows too.
Anyway, the camera controls are a bit wacky, randomly moves around when using the mouse wheel, and controls seem clumsy. Also the cob interpreter seems to have some flaws. The arm vehicle plant for instance made a habit of crushing my con vehicles...
But for the early stage it is at not bad. Give it some time and it might just work out as 3D clone of TA.

Why the hell is this in mods and not General/Off Topic?
I think TA3D has great potential due to the fact that it's going to use TA data files without any modification whatsoever, something that Spring was supposed to do.

Moved from the mods forum.

They are polishing minor bugs and getting ready to add release multiplayer support in next release. But yet, there are always some bugs... Die bug, die die !!

It looks nice, but TA3D's source is much worse than springs, I don't see it becoming big this way.
Posted: 26 Nov 2006, 14:31
by Babax
It don`t have to become "big". The only thing TA 3D going to do is to use OTA resources such as maps, units (models and properties), graphics, gameplay and full-scale multiplayer support in full 3D and much more.
It`s not as big target as for Spring "Best 3D RTS Engine ever made by mortals", so why not?

By big I mean a full TA clone with AI's and good multiplayer. With this kind of sucky coding that's going to be very hard.
