Space Rangers 2

Anyone played this game? It's on stardock.net now... supposed to be quite good. Critics loved it, by and large... it's cheap... it's (somehow) described as a combination of about a dozen sci-fi games (not all of them strategy games even) which I would call legendary.

Metacritic: http://www.metacritic.com/games/platfor ... dominators

The best review as from "gaming trend" a site I've never heard of. But here's what they said, "There is not a single second wasted in the entirety of the game and there is no mistaking it for a small game. Space Rangers 2 is epic in scope, gargantuan in size, and goes so far beyond fun it borders on ridiculous. I am absolutely drunk in love with this magnificent title and have forced myself to finish this review just so I can get back to saving the universe - with a little pillaging on the side."

So does anyone know if it's actually good, or is it maybe... eh... like 2001 or something, where people say it's good because they have no idea what the h*ll is going on and don't want to tell anyone?

I've played it and realized that yes...its Oblivion in space with much more primitive graphics (don't think that these aren't good looking. They are QUITE attractive, but not jaw dropping like OB).

Huge, multifaceted, complex. Its like EV Nova blown to SupCom sizes. I'm serious.

Here is an example of game play:

I was low on cash and decided to earn me some money. I bought some drugs at a pirate base to be sold at another pirate base, and then I would buy guns from that pirate base and sell to the original pirate base. But as I was traveling...A Space Cruiser warped next to me and demanded I stop to be scanned.

I said "Uh...by!" and tried to warp away. BAZAPO he started firing at me and I had to do some fancy maneuvering to avoid getting blown apart. BAZAPO! BAZAPO! My ship was getting one too many holes blown in it, and so...I surrendered. My ship was docked with a nearby planet and I was sent to prison.

Then the game switched to a, I kid you not, A TEXED BASED ADVENTURE! I had to live for three years in prison, playing out each hellish week in text! I snitched on my cell mates and got out after a year and a half. Only problem was I had to constantly watch my back. Damn inmates don't really like...snitches. But I got out, and with a new ship, I decided...to start smuggling again!

it looks really neat but I have a question...

Can i map for them? That terrain is so bad it's almost completely depressing.

Meh the terrain is a side note. I really do think the game/idea are quite cool. I'll have to check it out.

As a rule I can't really get into games that aren't guided goal oriented. I'd rather play the most static jap RPG then morrowind. Is this game going to peak my interest or will I get bored with the sandbox almost instantly. I prefer games that use sandbox gameplay to express a blatant and obvious goal, IE fallout.

no way the original morrowind was the key. infinity routes to the win. best one was to get into the mage guild, find the head of the guild, pickpocket him causung him to attack you and kill with without penalty, and nick his staff of levitation. infinte flying WEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Swift, then you will like Dark Messiah. That game is to Oblivion the way Arx Fatalis was to Morrowind. That is...better combat, tighter story, but smaller world and less choices...oh and better graphics and lip synching (the jury is still out on the voice acting)

My one problem with Space Rangers 2 is its a bit hard to get 'started' in the fight against the Dominators. But once you get started, you start blowing the crap out of stuff and then things are good.

It's impressive that so many of you have not only heard of it, but have played it! Where did you guys hear about it? I heard about it in this irritating StrategyFirst newsletter I keep on trying to unsubscribe from.

Dark Messiah is doing very poorly in the ratings, from what I've seen.

I thought Arx Fatalis had appalling graphics, and the character you play is terrible. also, with the morrowind texture mod and better bodies the characters look seriously good.

I liked Arx Fatalis' graphics quite a deal. It was the ambiance. But Dark Messiah takes after Arx in quite a way. Lots of underground stuff, a night vision spell, a suitibly evil plot.

I love the plot to Dark Messiah. Not complicated, but fun. Basically evil Vs...less Evil. But...who is the lesser evil? You or the Necromancers?

When I play...its the Necromancers

I just prefer gore to sexual material... It is okay, but I just prefer violence to watching naked (video game, of coure) chicks.

Not to mention, when the violence parts play, I sometimes control them 8)

By the way, how the hell does it "remembers me" when you are trying to remember it!?

Actually, Dark Messiah also has the sexual content too! Or at least very very very very very nudity. Just no nipples, so it gets out on a technicality. But we all love hot succbi, right?

But yes...Space Rangers 2...best game ever. The title is also a hoot.

Read a review on some site or another and I'm looking at the box in stores regularly. But I have sooo many games to play right now :(.

I'm probably ordering it for, err, christmas (after playtesting it though :P), looks like fun.

I was asking about some more indepth infos about it because the hopepages (german/international) didn't tell me much about it.

There's another RPG/RTS mix out there called Star Wolves (and Star Wolves 2, same game just more features). It feels and plays like a mixture of Homeworld, Freelancer and your out-of-the-box RPG... you gain XP based on missions and can buy new skills from one of four predefined skilltrees for your characters, special characters get individual trees apparently. It's a lot like Freelancer but doesn't feel as much alive as Freelancer does.

It's not quite bug free but fun.
My alter ego thought it was a good idea to fly right through that space station instead of flying around it to dock with the mothership. Boy I'm glad that game has no friendly collisions because every other time my fighters try to dock from the other side of the docking ramp right through the mothership's outer hull... aside from that, it's really cool and runs on my crap system while managing to look good. Also the game music is pretty decent. 8)

Oh, can be found on the same site as well...

I read it uses Starforce, is that true?
