First of all I would like to point out that ota heightmaps are made of 100% concentrated fail.
Now that we have that out of the way...
NOIZE asked me to remake this map, so here it is in all it's spendor and glory. I added some featrues to make it a bit more interesting.
Features by Lathan, Skybox by IceXuick.

Another moonmap that looks like it was randomly generated...these are starting to get old.

well, my biggest problem was keeping the details of the heightmap intact.
If you will notice there are spots where there are lines on the map (It's also on the heightmap). The reason i9s because of the "Tiles" system of ota. Some of the tiles were at slightly different heights. That was fine for ota because it was a flat texturing system so there was almost no noticeable difference. When you render so0mething like that it starts to show up really badly.
So basically I had to import the heightmap at a designmap size of 16***x16*** (a 28x28 map in spring) simply so that I could preserve the detail of the heightmap. It took damn near 3 hours to generate the 32 bit heightmap. Not worth the effort in my opinion but I bought 3 movies last night so not a real big deal, but I can honestly say that I prolly won't be doing any more remakes of ota maps because the time spent generally isn't worth the effort. Plus you have to realize that when you generate a 16***x16*** map, exporting becomes a bit of a hassle considering that the file size is damn near a gig, and if you export as a RAW file it's around 1.2 gigs.
Takes one hell of a hit on memory preformance. Needless to say it was a bit hairy as to whether I was going to lose all that work or not.
Too much trouble

You know what space maps I would be interested in? Ones with Venus/Neptune/Saturn climates.
Oh, and this one is interesting. I'll play it sometime.

I've been looking into it, however I am having trouble finding landscape shots of any other than mars. And unfortunately many of them look roughly the same, not to mention that finding textures for all of them is one hell of a bitch

I'll look into it myself, if I can.

Thanks forboding!
Looks pretty good.
Some things though:
- the pixels from the heightmap are quite visable.
- i wish there were more startingpositions for FFA
- the gravity is a tad too high :)

It always seems a shame to me that all the moonmaps we have basically feature craters as their primary feature. Now obvoiusly createring is a major part of the moons topography, but the moons of the solar system have so much more to offer.
For example
From our moon.
Not that this is a dismissal of all the cool moon-maps being made at the moment, they're damn good. It's just it feels like there's unexploerd potential there.

Your moon climate looks really nice. Hopefully you'll make some more maps with it (with your own style heightmaps

).

Saturn and Neptune are gas giants, that is, they don't have any solid surface, only a huge sea of liquid gas. Not a very good place to build a base and spaem gatorz on. Venus, OTOH, is a completely different story...
