wii doesn't win. Wii doesn't even compete. They are entirely different brands of entertainment platforms. Wii is a game console and PS3 is a entertainment center master unit. The Wii still doesn't even have DVD playback capabilities, and the PS3 still only has a few quality game manufacturers. It should be pretty obvious what you are buying when you spend $250 on a wii and nintendo still makes money compared to spending $600 on a PS3 and sony still losing money. You get ALOT less console with the wii, you're really only buying a cool experimental interface and a platform to play nintendo brand games. You aren't paying for much actual computer.

This is the heart of the issue, what Nintendo is doing well in this debate they would be doing well irrelevant of what they did with the console, and they really aren't even competing with sony, they are building different products. Nintendo is selling a game platform, you can play games on it, they are marketing their game play interface and the quality of their home team designers. Sony is building a consumer level entertainment system computer interface, while it plays games that's only half the story, just like a PC. It also is a bundle for all the forward moving tech, high definition film, high sound quality, TV based internet access, at a small scale life-internet integration in the form of software similar to the xfire suite.

If you buy a wii you are buying a game console, if you buy a PS3 you are buying an entertainment optimized computer that hooks up to your TV. Nintendo isn't selling entertainment integration, they are selling what they have always sold, and Sony isn't selling just another game console, they are selling something that pushes forward into total device unity. I refuse to compare them on non relative terms, they aren't even playing in the same arena. To look at this issue and go "Nintendo wins because of this feature", "Nintendo wins because $ is more affordable then Sony's $" or "Sony wins because it has better graphics" is just ignorant, it assumes the two companies are selling the same product, and they very simply put, are not.

The question of "should I buy a wii" vs "should I buy a PS3" is the question of "should I buy an e-machine" or "should I buy an alienware"? They aren't designed remotely for the same function. Are you a budget technologist (most hobbiest gamers are) or are you an enthusiast technologist?

I go by what I always have, leave integration to computers (which a PS3 is, but you can't download freeware can ya? Or patches? Or Demoes, maybe...) And, I am getting a game console for the reason it was made, playing games...

I am not getting a PS3, sounds like a computer, and I could use the extra 600 I would have for a lot more computer things... Like adding it to the 510$ I have and getting a monster!

You can't get a monster PC for $1100 US dollars. Per your dollar power you get ALOT more out of a PS3 on release date then you would getting a PC, at least in the functions they both preform. PC in the equivalent power range of a PS3 would be about 1500-1800 dollars, but it will be able to do alot of things that a PS3 won't, like word processing

Or you can buy a cheap computer and a cheap console, and leave gaming to one and the other stuff to the other. 300 bucks is good for an average office computer.

I prefer PC gaming to console gaming either way. I'd rather have an expensive computer and no console then a cheap computer and a cheap console. If I buy either console it will be dependent on what features they have that I like as much as it will be on what games they have that I like.

No matter how much they try they will always compete for the same pool of money and the same pool of game developers. Each platform competes for every potential gamer out there (e.g. the PS3 and 360 both offer download services for small or old games to appeal to the "non-gamers" the Wii is aiming for, with its innovation the Wii is attracting a lot of hardcore gamers, etc), with varying success. They haven't chosen the same categories to assert superiority in but all of them will be weighted against each other.

Remember how Sony said the PSP doesn't compete with the DS? Well, it's getting slaughtered by the DS so whether they wanted or not, they are competing.

How many people will buy a PS3 as a media player instead of a console? Who wants a 600$ media player? Sure it's cheaper than Bluray players but who wants a Bluray player? That format has still a few years to go before the mainstream will buy it in droves, if that even happens at all (DVDA, anyone?).

AFAIK there's only one company lined up for HDDVD. No idea how many there are for Bluray, I had the impression there were more than four but then again most of these are owned by the same parent company so it's possible that there are only four conglomerates supporting it. But are there even 28 independent movie companies?

I doubt that, but if I used that 500$ for *Cough New processor, New GFX card Cough * I could easily beat it...

But I want my own computer, for me, not one any of my computer illiterate family can touch

Now, I can get a good computer for 1100$, it will last at least 3 years, and 3 years and I can upgrade INSTEAD OF BUYING A NEW ONE, and save a couple hundred...
