AA vs XTA vs XvM game performance (fps)

On an empty map at gamestart I get 5-7 fps in AA but 20-22 in other mods. This difference remains throughout the game.
What's different in AA that it's soo much heavier on the system? (note that "buy a faster system" doesn't answer this question.)

What are your specs?
It could be that your system memory is too little to handle AAs buildtrees and is constantly moving stuff into swap. Other than that I can't think of anything unless your video memory is too little and textures are being juggled.

p4 533 2.8GHz
x700 64bit 128MB
DRI enabled Mesa, current r300 cvs. (xorg 7.1.1-ish)
I think I have too little cpu (bus power) or gfx power, I checked memory and it stays ~ 200-300MB, the driver may be doing some gl functions in software.
Anyway, it's just playable, may upgrade to an X800 sometime, because I'm attached to open drivers.

Xorg 7.1 broke ABI compatibility with Xorg 7.0 and before, so vendors have to recompile their closed source drivers (which neither ATI nor nVidia have done yet).

(which neither ATI nor nVidia have done yet).
NVIDIA says:
Version: 1.0-8774
Operating System: Linux IA32
Release Date: August 24, 2006
Release Highlights
- Added support for X.Org 7.1.
Added support for XVideo with the Composite X extension when using X.Org 7.1.
Improved interaction with newer Linux kernels.
And it works for me with Xorg 7.1 + XGL on GF6600
