People rename accounts, how to avoid them?

[10:23:20] * Xronic has left #main (Quit: renaming account)
This guy hosted a FFA, camped in a corner, built a buzzaw and fired on everyone. As you all can guess I turned my attention on him instead of my earlier enemy and it seems some of the other players did that as well.
His buzzaw killed almost my entire base since I was under heavy attack from another player at the time. The other player had killed my comm, breached my lines and managed to kill my antiradar hence why his buzzaw was so effective.
Anyway, after some rebuilding (I did have some factories left) I attacked Xronic and breached his defences. Then he started to complain that we were ganging on him etc. (it was FFA) And as far as I could tell I was the only one with units in his base.
Anyway, he started threatening to end the game if I continued my attack, I didnt stop since I really wanted to kill his buzzaw and it was still alive.
When my second wave of tanks rolled in he stopped the game, quit the game and renamed his account.
How on earth do you avoid dumbasses like this, I really dont want to end up in a game with him again.
I wish there was some sort of bad standing list that people could make, so that I could have people show red when they are on my bad standings list, that way I could avoid them. And it would be even better if changing names didnt allow them to get away.

We should be attaching users to an unchangeable ID every time they register an account, this way we could allow multiple users with the same name and also allow people to keep an eye on those they suspect of behavior like this.

I prefer a red colour with which you can mark players you don't want to play.
Just last time I played with some silver star in 2v2 and all he managed to do in half hour was 20 peewes and he teched to lvl 3 although he had no economy for it (he had like +20 metal, when I had like +140). I still managed to beat both opponents. The irony is this player didn't even want to listen how wrong he plays, he though we won because of him....
So yea make some mark :D.

How many times have i been saying this ? Maybe finally someone listens to the idea when you bring it up. To implement it would be one of the simplest things in the world. No changes to spring would even need to be made, just to the lobby client/server
Tis would allow reliable stats, getting rid of lamers, game feedback from every game and so on... similar rating could be used here as in ebay. If you give use the uniqueID thingies, i can promis to build a webservice with user feedback, ratings, even a ladder system if so desired. All that is needed is to rework the user registering system and assign a uniqueID !

I just watched the replay, this guy was a real camper.
He sat in his corner, built up 180+ metal prod and energy to boot, built his buzzaw and then sat there. After he had made a name for himself with the buzzaw I told him hed get people pissed off with it. He responded by saing that it was the sole purpose of it.
Me and green were the only ones fielding alot of units in the game and we had been attacking eachother quite alot. After Xronics answer it seemed like green also got tired of him, the funny thing is that we did attack him almost simultaneously. Without outside communication of any sort, Green from the north and I from the west, the guy did have defences to the north so greens attack did no damage. On my front it was wide open though so I marched straight in.
So in essence it was 2 on 1 at that moment, but I honetly dont think it was unfair since he did bring it upon himself by sitting in a corner with a buzzaw firing on everyone. And regardless of greens attack I would have marched straight in since he had almost no defences and no mobile units of any kind to repel my attack.
We also had a purple player in game who managed to camp the whole time and produce a krog, the krog died to Xronics annihilators before doing any real damage at all, this was way before me and green attacked though so I dont really count him as an attacker on Xronic.
Now please implement a unique user id and a way for players to mark other players.

Recoding the spring server and assigning all current registered users a unique ID would not be the simplest thing in the world. Developmentally there are alot of more simple things that can be done. Spring server currently handles user names, not unique ID's, it would need some major changing to make it work. Changing lobby client and server significantly isn't any easier then changing spring.

It may not be easy swift, but we sure as hell need it.
I see more and more people getting more annoyed by it!

That's why I suggested it in the first place. I'm just clarifying that just because it seems like an incredibly useful feature it is NOT an easy implementation so don't expect it for a few releases assuming we can even get betalord to do it...

The best approach would be to use an email address during the registration process which will be your general ID, this'd need authentication however. The actual ingame name should be definable from within the client.

No, because the unique ID really should be publicly available, and it wouldn't be responsible of us to ask people for their email address without giving them the obvious option of making it not publicly available. Some people don't want to be harassed.

Could ban common addresses like Hotmail.... on second thought, there's way too many.
Why not just make it impossible to rename accounts without an admin/moderator's assistance, if it's a problem? That's the way it is on the forum. "AF" was once "Alantai Firestar" IIRC.

Dunno if the mods would want to deal with all that. There's a fair amount of movement in and out of clans, and the king titles alone.

That'd only be effective for preventing people like me from joining because I don't have any paid-for email addresses.

A simple method for helping (but not completely) to prevent the problem would be to only allow users to change their name once every weeks, month, whatever. (When I say simple this is only compared to the other suggestions I've read that involve modifications to the whole database)

Separate display name and login name.
Banlists, friends lists, ignore lists, and the like should use login name.
